The Government of Ontario must increase the number of Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinics (NPLCs) to ensure all Ontarians have access to primary care.

NPAO has, and continues to, communicate with the Ministry of Health that the establishment of more NPLCs in Ontario should be a priority. NPAO has received several inquiries from Regions across the Province interested in establishing an NPLC to address the health care needs of many Ontarians that do not have access to a primary care provider. This is particularly important in rural and remote Regions.

The law on medical assistance in dying ("MAID") in Canada has recently changed.

On March 17, 2021, the federal Government passed Bill C-7: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying), which legally expands access to medical assistance in dying ("MAID") in Canada. The bill was introduced in October 2020 following the decision of the Superior Court of Quebec i...

In Canada, healthcare professionals are provincially regulated.

As discussed in this op ed piece, there could be real benefits to nationalization or national portability of healthcare professional’s licenses (beyond already available mobility rights).

What would it take to nationalize licensing schemes? Some tweaking of the current system? A complete rethink?

I have no doubt that there are lots of opinions out there on this topic!

This column is an opinion by Dr. James Maskalyk and Dr. Kirsten Johnson. Maskalyk is an emergency physician, associate professor at the University of Toronto, and member of Médecins Sans Frontières. Johnson is an emergency physician, associate professor at McGill University, president of the Canad...

Whether you work in emergency medicine or just coping through the current pandemic as best as you can, going through personal or legal challenges - a gratitude practice can help especially in times of crisis.

Gratitude sounds so simple, yet can also be so difficult when adversity is thrust into our paths. I have made gratitude part of my daily habit. It has helped me be and feel like a better version of myself during this insane pandemic.

I am thankful for the dedication and resilience of the people in and around our communities, those who work in healthcare, in education, the essential workers who ensure we can go on with our lives as best as possible, and the family and friends who hold it all together. No matter how small your role may seem, you matter.

As we are going into yet another lockdown, ICUs are filling up, businesses need to yet again modify, restrict and shut down, being grateful might seem like a real stretch, so perhaps be grateful for just being and making it through to this point wherever you find yourself and whatever lies ahead. You might thank yourself in time.

Take care and be well, Carina

Did you know that expressing gratitude can improve a person’s well being as well as their relationships with others? Expressing gratitude is a small act that can make a big impact on a person’s overall mood and perspective. At the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Emerg...
