When I decided to focus my firm on business, IP, and estate planning, I didn't just close the door on my family law practice. I SOLD it, and the only reason I could is because I'd built a business solid enough that someone else wanted to buy it.
The people who buy businesses are looking for reliable, repeatable, predictable income, and that comes from solid SOPs, a systematic way of doing things, and intellectual property someone else can pick up and run with {and maybe even do better with, if they bring more money or marketing to the table}.
Replacing your 9-to-5 income is a great place to start, and I'll never tell you otherwise. But a business that only works when you're the one doing the work is a job, and a job can't be sold, handed down, or run by anyone else.
You can't leave your family your job, but you can leave them an asset.
