Washington College of Law - Student Bar Association

Washington College of Law - Student Bar Association President Amanda Molina [email protected] Vice-President Jaime Garcia de Paredes [email protected] The Student Bar Association (SBA) at American University’s Washington College of Law serves as the student government organization for the law school.

The SBA funds organizations, plans events, and provides resources for students and student organizations. The SBA also represents law student interests to the Washington College of Law (WCL), American University, and the local and legal communities at large, serving as a liaison between the students, administration, faculty and public. The SBA Constitution organizes the SBA into three branches: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. Each branch has unique characteristics and responsibilities, but all are composed of current law students. The Executive Branch sets the policy agenda and conducts the day-to-day business of the SBA. The President is the head of the executive branch and the chief student advocate of the SBA. The Executive Vice President assists the President in guiding the direction of the SBA. The Legislative Branch is composed of the SBA Senate and is headed by the Executive Vice President. Each class is represented by elected Senators whose terms last one year. Evening students and transfer students are also represented on the Senate. In addition, there are several at-large Senate seats for students wishing to represent the interests of the greater student body at WCL. The Senate proposes, considers, and votes on legislation. This includes approving the student organizations’ yearly budgets, granting contingency grant requests, chartering student organizations, amending the Constitution, and establishing the bylaws which govern SBA actions. The Senate yields four committees focused on different aspects of law school life: Finance, Groups and Organizations, Academic Affairs, and Student Services. The Senate also confirms Executive Board and Judicial Branch presidential appointees. The Senate typically meets every other week on Tuesday nights at 10:10pm in WCL Room 101 during the school year. The Judicial Branch is composed of one Chief Judge and four associate Judges, appointed by the President to terms that last as long as they are students in good standing at WCL. The Court interprets the Constitution and Bylaws and settles other disputes.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia Dies at 79

On behalf of the Student Bar Association, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Just yesterday I spoke with Justice Ginsburg about her remarkable friendship with “Nino.” Whether you agree with Justice Scalia’s opinions, concurrences, or dissents you have undoubtedly read in class, there is no question that he was a passionate, committed, and very intellectual legal mind. Our condolences go out to his family, friends, and to the entire Supreme Court.

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonin Scalia has died at age 79. Scalia was nominated to the court by President Reagan. Scalia took his seat Sept. 26, 1986.

Happy 130th birthday to WCL alumna ('22) Alice Paul! Alice Paul was an American suffragist, feminist, and women's rights activist, and the main leader and strategist of the 1910s campaign for the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which prohibits sex discrimination in the right to vote. She and members of the National Woman's Party staged the first protest and picketing of the White House as part of the nonviolent civil disobedience campaign known as the "Silent Sentinels." They climbed statues, chained themselves to fences, burned "watch fires" in front of the White House, and set fire to banners imprinted with President Wilson's words on democracy. For this, they were beaten by bystanders and police. They were sent to prison for seven months, where they staged hunger strikes that ultimately put enough pressure on a reluctant President Wilson to urge Congress to pass Amendment 19. Founded by women at a time when women were considered "unfit" to practice law, and educating pioneers of democracy like Alice Paul, WCL is truly an institution we should all be proud to be a part of. How will YOU make your mark on history?

Hi All - Anna and Dorethea, your SBA Diversity Committee Co-Chairs here! The Dean's Diversity Council and Office of Diversity Services will be hosting its Annual Program & Dinner this Thursday from 4:00-8:00ish (dinner begins at 6:45). The topic is "Mentoring: Formal and Informal Relationships" and will address how to negotiate the mentoring process as the mentor or mentored.

Just a quick note - Dorethea and I attended the ABA Circuit Leadership Meeting in Baltimore last month and the panelists, all successful practicing lawyers, strongly recommended finding a mentor and building a relationship with him or her throughout your career. So, we strongly suggest you check out this event!

Registration is required and can be accessed at this website: https://www.wcl.american.edu/secle/registration.cfm. Note that dress is business casual. Dinner is free!

Today marks the 14th anniversary of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The attacks forever changed the landscape of America as the people mourned the 3,000+ lives taken. But it also forever altered the legal landscape- from national security law to civil rights law, the system was dramatically changed. Today we remember the lives lost and the system shaken and our thoughts go out to all of those affected by the tragedy of that September morning in 2001.
