Did you know yesterday Monday Oct.11th 2021 was International Day of the Girl 2021? How did you celebrate it?

On December 19, 2011, United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 66/170 to declare October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child, to recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.

Executive DC Legal Services is a prime example of what this day represents. We are virtual firm navigating the digital world everyday while being a women-owned firm with an all-female team of attorneys and interns.

Even if you told your family that you don’t want life-sustaining treatments, you still need to create an EXTRA document that says the same thing.

Family members can act out of emotion, disregard your wishes, or refuse to let the medical team know what your wishes are because they disagree.

By creating a living will with your wishes, you ensure your family members won't be burdened with making an end of life decision.

When Kim Kardashian filed trademarks for SKKN and SKKN by KIM, she was hit with a cease and desist letter. Beauty Concepts LLC, which goes by the name SKKN+ sent the letter.

SKKN+ is a small business that provides salon, skin care, and beauty services. Lunsford filed for the SKKN+ trademark on March 28. Kim Kardashian filed a trademark application for SKKN by KIM on March 30 and one for SKKN on July 9.

Kardashian’s attorney has said they didn’t do anything wrong and that Lunsford going to the media right before they were scheduled to talk was disappointing. They hope to work out the dispute amicably.

Keara Wilson is the creator of the dance to Megan Thee Stallion’s single “Savage”. The dance helped Megan’s song become popular and win her a Grammy.

There have been challenges for black and brown creators on TikTok to get recognition for their intellectual property, but efforts are being made to get those creators the recognition they deserve.

At the dinner, Wilson and some other creators were surprised by being told they got their dances copyrighted.

Logitech and JaQuel Knight, an award winning choreographer, teamed up to help the creators get their copyrights. Now, they can own and monetize their creations. The partnership is a good step for BIPOC creators to get the recognition they deserve.

Douglas Hand is a fashion lawyer and he has offered his advice on the three major things to do legally when launching a brand. The first step is to form a legal entity to house the company. This protects you from personal liability and allows you to give investors equity to help grow your brand.

The next step is to trademark the brand name you choose. It is important to do this in any jurisdiction you want to sell in, but especially the U.S. and China. In China, trolls are known for trademarking names with no intent to use them and then selling them to those who actually want them for a lot of money.

Another important piece is the correct treatment and documentation of employees and consultants. Make any employee or consulting agreements very clear so your brand doesn’t get harmed. It is good to think about length and exclusivity of collaborations as well because you don’t want your brand to have to miss out on better opportunities.
