When it comes to buying or selling a horse, a clear and detailed agreement can make the entire process smoother for everyone involved. In equine transactions, I always encourage buyers, sellers, agents, and trainers to take the time to outline the essentials.
A strong purchase or sale agreement should, among other things, outline the agreed price, how and when payment will be made, and whether the purchase is contingent on the outcome of a pre-purchase exam. It should also clarify disclosures, warranties, any trial period expectations, who carries the risk of loss at each stage, who is responsible for transportation, etc. And when registration paperwork applies, it’s important to specify how and when that will be transferred to the new owner.
Clear terms help protect relationships and keep the focus where it belongs: on creating a smooth transition for the horse.
If you’re navigating a purchase or sale, make sure the paperwork reflects the deal you want to make.
