Long after the symptoms of COVID-19 finally fade, many people who were hospitalized with the virus will face a long road to recovery—not just physically, but mentally. Patients may not be able to walk or talk or think as well as they used to, or they’re haunted by nightmares and endure sleepless, anxiety-filled nights. For many people, life after the ICU and COVID-19 will feature months of rehabilitation. Part of the solution may be special clinics which provide holistic, follow-up care for COVID-19 survivors.

The COVID-19 lockdown has had a profound impact on many businesses and industries, one of the unexpected casualties being the illegal drug trade. With trafficking routes disrupted, the supply of opioids has dried up in many areas around the country, but this may not be as positive as it sounds. As states start to reopen, the risk of an overdose could be greater if people who have reduced their usage suddenly increase again. To prepare for this, SAMHSA supports increasing distribution of naloxone and training first responders to administer it while minimizing their exposure to COVID-19.

Delayed and inaccurate diagnoses are a serious threat to patient safety. New research released by Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Admissions and CRICO Strategies shows that 1 in 10 people with symptoms caused by major vascular events, infections, or cancers will be misdiagnosed. Among those with the most commonly misdiagnosed “Big Three” conditions, about half suffer a permanent disability or death because of the error. Act today to help Flatten the Curve!

Flattening the curve means that the social distancing measures now being implemented may not result in fewer cases, but slow down the rate at which people get sick.

A slower spread means the U.S. healthcare system would be less overwhelmed, and valuable resources like tests kits, ventilators, and hospital beds would be available for the people who most need them, resulting in fewer deaths.

〽️The straight line depicts where the U.S. healthcare system would hit its capacity.
〽️The sharp curve represents a lot of people getting COVID-19 in a short period of time.
〽️The gray curve depicts what health officials depict a slower spread of the virus would look like.
