OpenNotes – Patients and clinicians on the same page

It’s part of the 21st Century Cures Act. The mandate was supposed to take place in November 2020, but was pushed to April 5th, 2021 due to the pandemic.

With OpenNotes, doctors share their notes with patients through electronic health records (EHR). Practices and hospitals use various kinds of software for EHRs, such as MyChart. Once the mandated medical transparency measure goes into effect, patients will be able to log in and see their notes.

OpenNotes is the international movement dedicated to making health care more open and transparent by encouraging doctors, nurses, therapists, and others to share their visit notes with patients.

Nurses top Gallup's annual Honesty and Ethics of Professions poll with their highest ethical rating to date. Medical doctors, pharmacists and grade-school teachers also rank highly, with record- or near-record-high scores.
