TTown Tax Brief — September 13, 2026

Confirmed Alabama local-tax change: Autauga County

Effective September 1, 2026, Autauga County:

* Increased its general county sales-and-use-tax rate from 2% to 2.5%.
* Established a 3% rental tax on qualifying tangible personal-property rentals, including the listed general, automotive and linen categories.
* Left the county food/grocery rate at 2%.

Returns may be filed through the Local Tax account in My Alabama Taxes. Official ALDOR notice, published August 24, 2026; effective September 1, 2026.

Why it matters: Businesses using outdated POS or bookkeeping tax tables may undercollect tax on Autauga County transactions beginning September 1. Equipment, vehicle and linen-rental businesses may have a new county filing obligation.

TTown action:

* Identify retail and rental clients operating in or delivering taxable property into Autauga County.
* Verify the correct county and municipal sourcing before changing rates.
* Update POS, invoicing and bookkeeping systems.
* Review September transactions already processed and correct any undercollection or coding errors.
* Confirm the Local Tax account is active in MAT before the first affected return is due.

Federal and pending-guidance check

No new material IRS announcement, broadly applicable Treasury proposal or preparer-compliance change was identified today.

📢 Autauga County business owners: The general county sales-and-use-tax rate increased to 2.5% on September 1, 2026, and certain rentals are now subject to a 3% county rental tax. Check your register, invoicing and bookkeeping settings now so you collect and report the correct amount.

TTown Tax Brief — September 10, 2026

Confirmed Alabama guidance: Lodgings-tax registration

ALDOR issued new registration guidance for hotels, motels, cabins, tourist camps and other transient accommodations, including many short-term rentals.

* Alabama’s state lodgings-tax rate is 4% in most counties and 5% in 16 specified counties.
* County and municipal lodgings taxes may apply in addition to the state tax.
* Accommodations furnished for at least 180 continuous days are generally excluded.
* Campsite, RV, camper and marine-slip rentals furnished for at least 90 continuous days are excluded.
* New accounts must be registered through My Alabama Taxes.

Why it matters: Airbnb, vacation-rental and event-property clients may have state and local registration, collection and filing obligations even when using a booking platform.

TTown action: Add rental type, location, rental duration and platform-tax collection questions to business intake. Verify which jurisdiction administers each local tax before preparing returns.

ALDOR Lodgings Tax Notice, posted September 10, 2026.

Federal payment workflow—no tax-law change

The IRS reminded taxpayers that Direct Pay can make individual and business federal payments from a bank account without a fee. Payments may be scheduled up to 365 days ahead and generally changed or canceled at least two business days before the scheduled date.

TTown action: When assisting with payments, verify the tax year and payment type, save the confirmation number and never ask clients to provide online-banking passwords.

IRS announcement IR-2026-109, published September 10, 2026.

Proposals and other Alabama changes

No new broadly applicable federal proposal or general Alabama individual-income-tax change requiring TTown action was identified today.

Ready-to-post client tip

🏠 Do you rent a house, room, cabin or other short-term property in Alabama? State and local lodgings taxes may apply—even when you advertise through an online booking platform. Confirm who is collecting the tax and whether you need your own Alabama tax account before your next filing deadline.

TTown Tax Brief — September 9, 2026

Confirmed Alabama change: New v***r-products tax

Effective October 1, 2026, Alabama imposes a $0.10-per-milliliter excise tax on consumable v***r products sold wholesale or imported for retail sale.

* Wholesalers and responsible retailers must obtain an ALDOR V***r Products Tax License.
* MAT registration opens October 1 under “Less Common Account Types.”
* Selling without the proper license may result in penalties.
* Monthly returns and payments are due by the 20th; timely filers receive a 4.75% discount.
* V***r products must be included on the Sales for Resale/WRAP report.

TTown action: Identify v**e shops, convenience stores and other affected clients. Collect their ABC/Tobacco V***r Permit information, prepare them to register October 1, and update bookkeeping software to track milliliters sold, exemptions, inventory and monthly liability.

ALDOR V***r Products Tax Notice, posted September 8, 2026; effective October 1, 2026.

Confirmed federal guidance: Clean-fuel credit

IRS Notice 2026-53 provides the 2026 emissions-rate table and updated calculation rules for the Section 45Z Clean Fuel Production Credit. It includes transition relief and rules involving manure-derived fuels, used cooking oil and qualifying agricultural practices.

Why it matters: This is specialized guidance for domestic clean-fuel producers and certain agricultural clients—not ordinary trucking companies or fuel retailers.

TTown action: Screen applicable business clients carefully, update 45Z software and workpapers, and refer complex emissions modeling to a specialist when necessary.

IRS announcement IR-2026-108, published September 8, 2026.

Alabama system status

ALDOR confirms that the upgraded My Alabama Taxes system is back online. TTown should now test staff authentication, client invitations, payments and saved procedures through the official site.

Proposals or pending guidance

No new broadly applicable proposal requiring an immediate TTown workflow change was identified today.

Ready-to-post client tip

🚨 Alabama v**e and convenience-store owners: A new state v***r-products tax begins October 1, 2026. Businesses responsible for collecting the tax must register for the proper ALDOR license, track product volume and file monthly reports. TTown Tax Brief — September 4, 2026

Confirmed: MFA applies to tax firms of every size

The IRS clarified today that the FTC Safeguards Rule requires tax-preparation firms—regardless of size—to use multifactor authentication when accessing customer information, unless the firm’s qualified security individual approves an equivalent safeguard in writing.

Why it matters: MFA should cover TTown’s tax software, email, cloud storage and every service containing client information—not only IRS accounts.

TTown action:

* Verify MFA on every staff account and device.
* Eliminate shared usernames and passwords.
* Document any approved alternative control in the WISP.
* Add an MFA check to new-employee setup and annual security reviews.
* Remind preparers that clients must obtain their own IRS IP PIN; preparers cannot obtain it for them.

IRS Security Summit announcement IR-2026-106, published September 4, 2026.

Confirmed payroll-training reminder

The IRS advised employers to retain employment-tax records for at least four years, verify direct-deposit changes through a trusted channel and review employee withholding after major income or life changes.

A free IRS payroll webinar on September 8 will cover federal deposits, 2026 Form W-2 reporting changes and employer contributions to Trump Accounts.

TTown action: Add the four-year retention rule and independent direct-deposit verification to payroll procedures. Have payroll staff review the webinar material for software and W-2 workflow changes.

IRS announcement IR-2026-105, published September 4, 2026.

Alabama and pending-guidance check

No additional material ALDOR change was identified today beyond the MAT shutdown and upgrade already covered. No new broadly applicable federal proposal requires action today.

Ready-to-post client tip

🔒 Protect your tax return with an IRS IP PIN! This private six-digit number helps stop someone else from filing a federal return using your identity. You must request your own IP PIN directly from the IRS, and the IRS will never call, text or email asking for it.

TTown Tax Brief — September 3, 2026

Confirmed: New My Alabama Taxes procedures begin September 8

ALDOR’s detailed upgrade guide introduces several workflow changes:

* Clients will grant preparer access through a secure Third-Party Access Invitation; third-party passwords are discontinued.
* Users must configure at least two authentication methods, one being a password. Passkeys are supported.
* Legal-name changes require supporting documentation.
* Most returns and payments can be submitted together under one confirmation number.
* MAT remains unavailable from noon September 4 through September 8.

Why it matters: TTown’s existing client-access instructions and payment procedures will be outdated.

TTown action: Finish urgent MAT work before tomorrow’s shutdown. Beginning September 8, update staff instructions, establish authentication methods, and ask clients to use invitations—never email TTown their credentials or access codes.

ALDOR’s September 2026 MAT upgrade guide

Confirmed reminder: Protect records before disasters

The IRS issued a preparedness reminder on September 3, 2026. Tax firms should maintain secure electronic copies of essential records, review emergency plans annually, and confirm whether payroll providers carry a fiduciary bond.

TTown action: Verify encrypted off-site backups, test file recovery, document temporary operating procedures, and review the payroll provider’s bond and disaster plan.

IRS announcement IR-2026-104

Proposed—not effective

Treasury and the IRS proposed updated racial-nondiscrimination requirements for tax-exempt private schools. If finalized, they would apply to taxable years beginning on or after May 31, 2027. This is relevant only if TTown serves private schools or similar educational nonprofits; no general client or software change is required now.

Treasury announcement, September 3, 2026

Ready-to-post client tip

🔐 My Alabama Taxes is changing! Beginning September 8, businesses should give accountants and tax preparers access through MAT’s secure Third-Party Access Invitation. Never email your username, password, access code, or authentication code to anyone.

TTown Tax Brief — August 27, 2026

Confirmed: IRS retiring the FIRE system

The IRS will retire its Filing Information Returns Electronically (FIRE) system. Tax-year 2026 information returns filed in 2027 must transition to the Information Returns Intake System (IRIS).

Important deadlines:

* November 1, 2026: Last day for FIRE test submissions.
* November 9, 2026: Last day to modify FIRE TCC applications.
* November 19, 2026, at 3 p.m. Eastern: FIRE stops accepting information returns.

Why it matters: This directly affects TTown’s workflow for Forms 1099 and other information returns. Waiting until filing season could cause access problems and missed deadlines.

TTown action:

* Apply for an IRIS Transmitter Control Code now.
* Verify whether TTown’s software transmits through IRIS.
* Test CSV uploads and update written 1099 procedures.
* Train staff on IRIS before January.
* Subscribe to IRS IRIS QuickAlerts.

Official IRS announcement IR-2026-99, published August 24, 2026.

Extension clients: October 15 deadline approaching

The IRS reminded taxpayers that a filing extension does not extend the payment deadline. Individual 2025 returns on extension are generally due October 15, 2026. Interest and applicable penalties continue on unpaid balances.

TTown action: Create an extension-client list and begin scheduling appointments now. IRS Free File remains available through October 15 for taxpayers with 2025 AGI of $89,000 or less.

IRS announcement IR-2026-101, published August 26, 2026.

Training point: IRS authorization forms

The IRS clarified the different authorization levels:

* Form 2848: Qualified representative may represent the taxpayer.
* Form 8821: Designee may receive or inspect tax information but cannot represent the taxpayer.
* Third-Party Designee: Limited to discussing one return and generally expires after one year.
* Oral disclosure: Usually ends with that specific call or meeting.

TTown action: Train staff never to treat Form 8821 as power of attorney and retain signed authorization forms securely.

IRS Tax Tip 2026-66, published August 27, 2026.

Alabama and pending guidance: No material new ALDOR individual-income-tax or preparer-workflow announcement, and no new relevant federal proposal, was identified today.

📢 Did you file a tax extension? Your 2025 federal return is generally due October 15, 2026. An extension gave you more time to file—not more time to pay. Contact TTown Financial Tax Services now so you can avoid the last-minute rush and limit additional penalties and interest.
