Heading out of state or across county lines this summer? Here's what you need to know. 🚗

Getting pulled over while traveling can feel overwhelming—especially if you're unsure about your rights. Here's the reality:

✓ You have the right to remain silent. Don't answer questions beyond providing your license, registration, and insurance.
✓ You can refuse a roadside breath test (PBT). It's not the same as a breathalyzer at the station.
✓ Out-of-state stops can complicate things. Charges in another state or county may require additional legal strategy.
✓ Having a lawyer matters. The sooner you reach out, the sooner we can protect your rights.

The first 24 hours after an arrest are critical. Don't navigate this alone.

Summer road trips are here—but one common myth could cost you everything. ⚖️

Here's the truth: "One drink is fine if I'm driving" is a dangerous misconception. In Michigan, you can be arrested for OWI with a BAC as low as 0.08%—and that's just the legal limit. The reality? One drink can impair your judgment, reaction time, and decision-making. Even if you feel fine, the law doesn't care.

The consequences are real: license suspension, fines up to $1,000, court costs, and a criminal record that affects your job, insurance, and future. If you're facing charges after a traffic stop, you're not alone—and you have options.

Don't let one moment define your future. Free 30-min consult available. Let's talk about protecting your rights. 📞 517-299-5659 or book here: [Calendly link]

Client Victory: Charges dismissed pre-trial ✓

This client was facing serious allegations. The fear was real. The uncertainty was overwhelming. The future felt uncertain.

But here's what's possible with careful investigation and strategic motion practice.

Through careful investigation and motion practice, we identified critical flaws in the prosecution's case. The charges were dismissed before trial.

Justice served. Case closed. Life moves forward.

If you're facing charges in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Genesee, or Jackson County, reach out. Let's talk about what's defensible in your case.

I've been reflecting on why some clients move forward and some don't.

It's not about the strength of the legal case. It's not about the outcome. It's about whether they believe change is possible.

I've had clients with strong cases who stayed stuck because they couldn't imagine a different future. And I've had clients with difficult cases who fought hard because they could see themselves on the other side.

The difference is hope. Not naive optimism. Real, grounded hope—the kind that comes from understanding what's actually possible and having someone believe in it with you.

That's what I'm trying to build in every conversation. Not false promises. Not aggressive posturing. Just clarity about what we can control, what we can fight for, and what the path forward actually looks like.

Because when clients see that path, when they understand they have options and someone's in their corner—that's when real change becomes possible.

What's something you've been hoping for but didn't think was possible? I'd love to hear your story. Comment below or send me a message.

Ask Attorney Tara: Can I get my criminal record expunged in Michigan?

Yes—but eligibility depends on several factors:

The type of offense (some crimes can't be expunged)
How much time has passed since conviction
Whether you've stayed out of trouble
The judge's discretion

Expungement isn't automatic—you need to petition the court. But it's worth exploring if you're eligible.

Getting your record expunged means a fresh start. It means employers don't see the conviction. It means you can move forward without that weight.

If you're wondering about expungement please reach out. Let's talk about your options.

MYTH: You can't fight a DUI/OWI charge.

FACT: DUI cases are defensible. Breathalyzer accuracy, traffic stop legality, field sobriety test administration, blood draw procedures—all can be challenged. Many DUI cases are reduced or dismissed with proper defense.

Here's the reality: DUI charges are serious. But they're not unbeatable.

Police procedures matter. Equipment calibration matters. How the stop was conducted matters. How you performed field sobriety tests matters. All of these can be challenged in court.

I've seen DUI cases dismissed because of improper stops. I've seen cases reduced because of breathalyzer issues. I've seen clients get their licenses back through sobriety court.

If you're facing a DUI/OWI charge in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Genesee, or Jackson County, reach out. Let's talk about what's defensible in your case.

I've been thinking about what makes a defense attorney actually useful.

It's not the aggressive posturing you see in movies. It's not winning every battle. It's showing up and saying: "You matter. Your story matters. And I'm going to make sure this system hears you."

That's it. That's the core of it.

Because the legal system is designed to move cases, not to listen to people. It's designed for efficiency, not humanity. And when you're caught in it—scared, confused, feeling like a case number—you need someone who insists on your humanity.

I've had clients come in hostile, defensive, shut down. And the moment they realize I'm not here to judge them, that I'm here to understand their situation and fight for their rights—something shifts. They stop being defensive. They start being honest. They start believing that maybe, just maybe, this doesn't have to destroy them.

That's the work. Making sure people have a voice when the system is designed to silence them.

What does it mean to you to be heard? I'd love to know. Comment below or send me a message.

Ask Attorney Tara: What are my rights during a traffic stop in Michigan?

You have the right to:
✓ Remain silent (beyond providing license, registration, insurance)
✓ Refuse a search of your vehicle (unless officer has a warrant)
✓ Ask if you're free to leave
✓ Request an attorney before answering questions

You do NOT have the right to:
✗ Refuse a breathalyzer (refusal has serious consequences)
✗ Drive without a valid license
✗ Ignore lawful police commands

Knowing your rights protects you in the moment. It keeps you safe. It keeps you from saying something that could hurt your case later.

If you're pulled over, stay calm. Be respectful. But also be smart. And if you're facing charges related to a traffic stop, reach out before you answer questions.

MYTH: First-time offenders automatically get dismissed or light sentences.

FACT: There's no automatic outcome. Each case is unique. First-time status helps, but the charge, evidence, circumstances, and judge all matter. That's why strategic defense and negotiation are critical.

Here's what I see: First-time offenders often get lighter sentences than repeat offenders. That's true. But "light" is relative. And it's not guaranteed.

What matters is how you defend the case. What matters is the evidence. What matters is the judge. What matters is negotiation.

Being a first-time offender is an advantage. But it's not a guarantee. That's why you need someone who knows how to use that advantage strategically.

If you're facing charges as a first-time offender in Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Genesee, or Jackson County, reach out. Let's talk about what's possible for your case.
