TTown Tax Brief — September 13, 2026
Confirmed Alabama local-tax change: Autauga County
Effective September 1, 2026, Autauga County:
* Increased its general county sales-and-use-tax rate from 2% to 2.5%.
* Established a 3% rental tax on qualifying tangible personal-property rentals, including the listed general, automotive and linen categories.
* Left the county food/grocery rate at 2%.
Returns may be filed through the Local Tax account in My Alabama Taxes. Official ALDOR notice, published August 24, 2026; effective September 1, 2026.
Why it matters: Businesses using outdated POS or bookkeeping tax tables may undercollect tax on Autauga County transactions beginning September 1. Equipment, vehicle and linen-rental businesses may have a new county filing obligation.
TTown action:
* Identify retail and rental clients operating in or delivering taxable property into Autauga County.
* Verify the correct county and municipal sourcing before changing rates.
* Update POS, invoicing and bookkeeping systems.
* Review September transactions already processed and correct any undercollection or coding errors.
* Confirm the Local Tax account is active in MAT before the first affected return is due.

No new material IRS announcement, broadly applicable Treasury proposal or preparer-compliance change was identified today.
