To round out our National Make-A-Will Month posts, we offer the following suggestion to consider:

Parents, do you have a senior leaving for college soon, or a child that has turned 18?
You should consider discussing with them obtaining a Power of Attorney, a Medical Directive, a HIPAA Authorization, and a FERPA Release.

Once your child is 18, you no longer have the right to their medical, financial and educational information, even though you are the parent. These documents can help if your child desires that you have access to this information and wants to grant you authority to act on their behalf to assist with their launch into adulthood.

Fun Fact of the Week: Did you know that approximately only 31% of Americans have a Will and only 11% have a Trust?!

That means 58% of people are not prepared for unexpected life events. If you experience incapacity or death before your estate planning documents are completed, your estate and personal decisions may be handled and distributed in a manner that you do not desire. There are state statutes that say where your property will go, and without legally effective documents in place and/or beneficiary designations, those will control where your estate goes regardless of your intentions (even if they are in writing). Additionally, your loved ones may incur costs and difficulties that could have been avoided with proper planning.

Our whole office, oldest to youngest, enjoyed sponsoring and participating in the Sierra Vista Hospital 5K run this last weekend, benefiting a great local organization, Sierra County Cancer Assistance. Big congratulations are due to Clara for taking 3rd in the Women's division!
