Bankruptcy Isn’t the End of the World

Most people come out of bankruptcy with a credit score in the 600's. If your score going in is in the 700's, it will drop. If your score is in the 500's, it will go up.

For some, bankruptcy may seem like the end of the world. However, according to a study from LendingT...

Got an email today from "Candace" in Reston, who said she had lost her security clearance because of financial concerns, and is now out of work. That makes me so upset. People do NOT lose their clearances for filing bankruptcy. They do lose their clearance for NOT dealing with the problem. Dealing with the problem involves usually three steps. Talking to a lawyer and figuring out what you need to do. Self reporting your financial problems and the steps you are taking to fix them. If necessary getting your plan to deal with the debts approved by a court.

U S Senate Ignores The Seventh Amendment |

The US Senate this week voted to ignore the 7th Amendment to the Constitution. Patrick Henry predicted the Federal courts would oppress the average citizen unless trial by jury in civil cases was guaranteed.

U S Senate Votes to Override Bill of Rights Last night, the United States Senate blocked an effort to restore a neglected part of America’s Bill of Rights: The Seventh Amendment to the Constitution. The Seventh Amendment grantees a jury in civil cases; cases where people are suing other people, or c...

Student loan forgiveness program is about to face its first major test

Starting today, a handful of people are eligible for public service student loan forgiveness.

Under this program, if you make 120 payments (don't have to be all in a row) while you are working on public service (mostly government or hospitals, maybe some other employers) what's left on your Federal direct student loans are forgiven.

It's recommended that your certify your employer and your payments every year, but apparently it's ok to try to go back and reconstruct it.

In the last few years I've talked to a couple hundred people I THINK are eligible, maybe four or five of those had actually heard of it and enrolled.

The best info from government on this program is from the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau.

Here's a good article from Market Watch.

In October, the first cohort of borrowers will be eligible for forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

Got this sad email today from Charlene. “I had considered filing bankrutpcy a year and a half ago but have been desperately trying not to go this route. Things have gone from bad to worse for me so I am at the point where I am completely out of options. i tried my best to save what was left of my credit and not to have to go this route but things are completely out of control.”
Charlene, wanting to try to pay your debts is one thing. But if you are trying to “save what was left of my credit,” your strategy was exactly wrong.
Once your credit has turned bad, bankrutpcy for most people is the fastest way to fix it. If you had file bankruptcy when you first made an appointment, February 2016, you could get a car loan today at around 8%. Since you tried “desperately not to go this route” you'd likely be at 19% today, maybe worse.
If you had filed bankruptcy in the spring of 2016, by next spring you could get approved for an FHA mortgage and buy a house!
The purpose of bankrutpcy is to help you. The banks—and the debt settlement scammers—don't want you to know that. But it's true.
The President says filing bankruptcy shows how smart he is. On that, you should believe him.
