Choosing an executor is one of those decisions that's easy to put off, but it makes a real difference for the people you love. This is the person who will handle your final affairs, so it's worth a little thought.

This week, try writing down one or two names and asking yourself: Would this person be organized, steady, and available when it counts? Once you have someone in mind, have a simple conversation with them. Asking "Would you be willing to do this for me?" now saves them surprises later.

Our own Sandy Eisenmann, Senior Elder Care Advisor, recently spent time with about 65 nurses and staff from St. John's Hospital — a place she knows well, since she used to work there.

Her talk, "How to Maintain Control of Your Life and Money," covered what happens if you can't make decisions for yourself, the difference between a Will and a Trust, and what to watch for as someone you care about gets older.

Nurses see families in some of their hardest moments. We're grateful for the chance to share practical tools that can make those moments a little easier — for patients and for the people who love them.
