VICTORY! Today, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Senate Bill 419 into law to eliminate suspensions for minor misbehaviors and protect California students K-8 from discriminatory and harmful school climates. SB 419 is a major milestone in addressing equity in schools across the state and eliminating the school to prison pipeline.

A stranger asked me if I would send my kid to school during a teacher strike. Nope, I would not. I could not.
They would be enrolled in Kim School until the strike was over. They would be elated to return to their regular program.

I teach for them. If you can help, it will be appreciated.

Jim Preis Dies, Activist Fought for Rights of Mentally Ill

We had our disagreements, mostly about admin stuff, sometimes about his attire for court but never about the work. And yes he wore flip-flops everyday. My former boss at Mental Health Advocacy Services in Los Angeles has passed. http://ow.ly/GtIE30mf7lj

Jim Preis, a Southern California lawyer and activist who for decades fought for the rights of the mentally ill and disabled, has died.

According to Katie Hurley, a child and adolescent psychotherapist and parenting educator, one of the difficult parts of getting help for children suffering from anxiety is that anxiety often presents as a constellation of negative behaviors. In learning to spot the sneaky signs of child anxiety, identify triggers of anxiety and teach kids coping skills, parents and educators can empower kids to manage their anxious feelings independently and thrive in social and academic settings.

More often than not, symptoms of child anxiety fall into the following categories: (1) Psychosomatic Complaints, (2) Anger and Irritability, (3) Sadness, (4) Isolation and Avoidance, (5) Fatigue, (6) Poor Concentration, (7) School Refusal, (8) Frequent Questions.

Anxiety in children can be triggered by a number of factors, including genetics, academic/achievement pressure, learned anxiety, bullying/social issues, transitions, loss, violence or abuse.

There are strategies that can be implemented at home and in school to help children manage and cope with their anxiety.

Read here for a list of suggested coping strategies: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/parenting/wp/2018/10/09/what-does-childhood-anxiety-look-like-probably-not-what-you-think/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.b7ae0aeda8f1
