October is Estate Planning Awareness Month, and I’ve been thinking about something that often gets overlooked when we talk about estate planning.

It’s easy to focus on the documents: getting them prepared, signed, and notarized. Those steps matter, of course. But what happens after the paperwork is finished?

If someone you love ever needed to step in and help, would they know where to find important documents? Would they know who to contact or where to begin?

Through my work as a notary, I’ve come to appreciate that estate planning is about more than getting documents signed. It’s also about thinking ahead, organizing important information, and making things a little easier for the people who may one day need to help us.

You don’t have to figure everything out at once. Sometimes, the best place to start is with one simple question:

If someone needed to step in for me, what would I want them to know?

That’s a thought I’ll be exploring throughout October, along with practical ways to get organized and resources to help you take the next step.

September is National Preparedness Month.

When we think about being prepared, we often think about emergency kits, food, water and flashlights.

But there’s another kind of preparedness that’s easy to overlook:

Could someone you trust find the important information they would need if you couldn’t tell them where it was?

Think about things like:

• Your will or trust
• Powers of attorney
• Advance directives
• Insurance information
• Important financial accounts
• Contact information for the people handling your affairs
• Passwords or instructions for accessing important information
• Even something as simple as knowing where your original documents are kept

You don’t have to organize everything at once.

Start with one question:

“If something happened to me tomorrow, would the person I trust know where to begin?”

If the answer is no, that’s a good place to start.

This month, take a few minutes to identify your most important documents and information, make sure the right people know where to find them, and check that everything is still current.

Preparedness isn’t about expecting something bad to happen.

It’s about making things a little easier for the people you love if life doesn’t go according to plan.

One of the things I’m looking forward to about the Kitsap Aging Expo is the opportunity to connect with people who are thinking about what comes next.

Maybe you’re planning ahead for yourself. Maybe you’re helping an aging parent. Maybe you’re somewhere in between.

There are so many pieces to getting affairs in order, and sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing where to start.

I’ll be at the Expo representing Precision Notary and talking with attendees about notarization, estate planning documents, and other ways I may be able to help or point you toward the right resource.

I’m also looking forward to meeting the other local professionals and organizations who will be there. Community connections matter.
