Sarasota County Emergency Management officials have coordinated with municipal and community partners to provide cold weather sheltering for those in need due to the predicted drop in temperatures this weekend.

📍 The Salvation Army – Center of Hope, 1400 10th St., Sarasota will conduct their cold weather operation plan on Friday, Dec. 23, Saturday, Dec. 24 and Sunday, Dec. 25 with intake beginning at 4:40 p.m. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Breakfast will be served at 5:30 a.m.

📍 100 Church, 14525 Tamiami Trail, North Port (near Blue Tequila restaurant) will open a cold weather shelter Friday, Dec. 23 through Sunday, Dec. 25, beginning at 5 p.m. each evening.

Emergency Management officials remind residents that pets should not be left outside during the cold weather. Those who need to be outside overnight or during the early morning hours are encouraged to dress in several warm layers and limit skin exposure to the wind.

Sarasota County Fire Department officials advise using caution when heating your home, as the risk of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increase during very cold weather due to the improper use of heating devices, so extreme caution is advised. STRANGER DANGER! On the 17th day of safety, beware of suspicious strangers that come knocking on your door! Scammers know how to catch you off guard. Whether it's fake package deliveries or charity scams, remember to not open your door for anyone you don't know.

With some students home for winter break, your kids may spend more time home alone. Remind them of your home safety tips so your family can have a safe holiday season.

State Attorney Ed Brodsky announced today that Christopher G Hopkins was convicted after jury trial of two counts of Unlawful Filing of False Documents or Records Against Real or Personal Property and two coutns of Simulating Legal Process. The crimes were committed on 06/13/2019 and investigated by Manatee County Sheriff's Office. The trial was held at the Manatee County Courthouse on December 12th and 13th.

The crimes carry a maximum possible sentence of 30 years Department of Corrections.

Sentencing is scheduled for February 15, 2023.

The defendant and co-defendant entered the Manatee County Clerk’s Office on June 13, 2019, and attempted to record fraudulent lien documents that would have affected the property interests of the victims. The two victims in this case were high ranking Manatee County officials. Even after being informed by staff that the documents were fraudulent liens, the defendants persisted in their request to have the documents recorded. They represented that they were part of the investigative agency of the “Statewide Common Law Grand Jury” and had authority to file such liens. However, this entity is not State created or sanctioned as an authoritative investigative agency. Due to the quick thinking of the staff at the Manatee County Clerk’s Office, the fraudulent documents were recognized before they were able to be recorded.

The lead prosecutor in the case, Assistant State Attorney Kristen Colelli commented, “Through the hard work and dedication of the staff of the Manatee County Clerk’s Office and the case Detective at the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the victims were protected from fraudulent liens being placed on their homes. I would also like to thank the jury for their hard work and consideration in this case.”

If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact Assistant State Attorney Kristen Colelli in the Manatee County office at 941-747-3077.

Catalytic converter thefts have become a nationwide trend and the City of Venice is not immune to the problem. Over the past two months we have experienced two within the City where large fleet (cab over style) vehicles were targeted. We would like to share some valuable information to identify if you are at risk of being a victim and some tips to help mitigate your risk.

• Park in a well- lit area and be mindful of security cameras that can capture or thwart potential thieves.
• Install motion sensitive lights and cameras in your parking area
• Have an anti-theft device installed on your vehicles, several manufacturers offer catalytic converter anti-theft devices to protect your converter from theft
• Etch your license plate or vin number into the catalytic converter shield. This will make it identifiable to law enforcement should the suspects be located with the stolen items
• Paint your catalytic converter with fluorescent high temperature paint. Most reputable scrap metal dealers will decline to purchase an item painted in such a manner

Santa's almost here! Merry Christmas from all of us at the State Attorney's Office!
Thank you to the City of Sarasota, Government for inviting me to participate in the Sarasota Holiday Parade. It was great to see the amazing crowds that lined Main Street on such a beautiful night. It was nice seeing our Sarasota Police Department Chief Rex Troche, Sarasota Mayor Erik Arroyo, Commissioner Hagen Brody, The Oriole Bird with the Baltimore Orioles, and of course none other than the one keeping Gotham City safe, Batman.
A wonderful honor for an attorney who served his community with honor and distinction. Many of us at the State Attorney's Office had the privilege of knowing Layon Robinson. I know he's smiling down from the heavens tonight.
Hanukkah 2021 begins tonight and ends the evening of December 6th. Wishing all of our Jewish friends a warm and Happy Hanukkah.
