Anne officially announcing that she’s moving to Paris. The reality of what that actually means starts to sink in. A California-based law firm. U.S. clients. A dog. An entire life built in America… how do you transition to a new chapter in France.

Anne opens up about the months of “planning and scheming” that went into making this move possible, explaining how she carefully mapped out a way to continue operating her business while physically living in Paris. This conversation kicks off a deeper look into the logistics, legality, and emotional side of moving abroad while maintaining a career back home. If you’ve ever dreamed about completely changing your life, this is the reality behind the fantasy.

In this clip, Brittany and Anne break down why so many movies, TV shows, and productions are moving overseas, and it’s not just for the scenery. Anne explains how countries across the European Union, especially France, offer massive tax incentive programs for audiovisual productions, making it financially smarter in many cases to shoot abroad than in the United States.
They discuss how productions can save thousands or even millions through tax credits that offset travel and production costs. What seems expensive at first glance often becomes a strategic financial move once the incentives are factored in. If you’ve ever wondered why Hollywood keeps filming in Europe, this clip explains the business side behind the trend.

Your voice. Their ad. $5K to fight it. So most creators don’t.
That’s the business model. It’s called inertia arbitrage.

Brittany and Anne dive straight into the moment everything changed after the Palisades Fire. What started as a devastating wildfire quickly turned into a legal nightmare when Anne’s landlord dismissed toxic ash covering her home as just “dust”—and told her to wipe it up. Anne recounts the exact quote that pushed things over the edge.

From there, Anne makes it clear—she’s not letting this go. She’s taking her landlord to small claims court and bringing everyone along for the journey. This clip sets the stage for the entire Landlord-Tenant series, showing exactly how a shocking response turned into a full-blown legal battle.

That streaming show you’re half-watching while you scroll? It’s written for you to half-watch while you scroll.

On this week’s episode of MLF, producer Miles Alva breaks down how the streaming giants are now designing film and TV for a second-screen audience — simpler plots, less nuance, stories you can follow with one eye on your phone. It’s not an accident. It’s the product.

Miles is currently producing A24’s Misty Green, directed by Chris Rock and in the running for Cannes. Brittany and I get into indie film, big-streamer strategy, and what all of this means for storytelling.

Film nerd? Law nerd? Both? We’ve got you this week.

Drafting a contract is really just solving a mathematical equation. The variables are words.

That’s how I explained it to producer Miles Alva on this week’s MLF — and his face said everything. “That’s exactly why I would never want to be a lawyer.”

Miles ( ) is a friend, a producer, and currently working on A24’s Misty Green, directed by Chris Rock and in the running for Cannes. Brittany and Anne got into indie film production, the producer’s side of the deal, and why the creative brain and the legal brain don’t always speak the same language. We also quote as Carrie Bradshaw, of course.

Here’s the thing nobody inside the industry says publicly: ⬇️

We want to pay you correctly. We want the writer to get every dollar s/he negotiated — every residual the WGA fought for.

That’s not in dispute.

What’s hard is the system.

We sat down with Heather Heukrodt, Head of Production Finance at , and we talked honestly about what it’s actually like to try to do right by a writer inside a massive production infrastructure that wasn’t built for simplicity. The bureaucracy is real. The confusion is real. And the people trying to navigate it with integrity? Also real.

As a studio-trained entertainment attorney, I’ve been on both sides of these agreements. This conversation hit close to home.

Heather’s full episode is out TODAY.
