CAIR-SFBA is proud to announce Assemblymember Matt Haney as the “Liberty Award” honoree at our 32nd Anniversary Gala on Saturday, Oct. 17.

As the author of AB 2017, Assemblymember Haney is leading the effort to secure official state recognition for Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha in California. The bill has passed the Legislature and is headed to the governor's desk for signature.

Assemblymember Haney's leadership has helped move California closer to recognizing the faith and traditions of Muslim Californians in state law.

We look forward to honoring him at this year’s gala.

AB 2664 would create new restrictions on peaceful speech and protest outside houses of worship, putting constitutionally protected activity at risk of criminal penalties, including up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.

CAIR-CA, the ACLU, and other civil liberties advocates have raised serious concerns about the bill’s impact on First Amendment rights and the risk of selective enforcement.

Places of worship should be protected from violence, threats, harassment, and obstruction.

But that protection should not come at the expense of peaceful civic engagement and public accountability.

A recently filed federal lawsuit describes Palo Alto High School students as having been “exposed” to CAIR-SFBA Executive Director Zahra Billoo during an educational visit to a local mosque.

In a new San Francisco Chronicle op-ed, Zahra responds to the lawsuit and the troubling idea that hearing from a Muslim civil rights advocate, visiting a mosque, or learning about Islam should be treated as something constitutionally suspect.

“Exposure is not endorsement.”

Zahra also warns of the broader consequence: if schools begin to see engagement with Muslim communities as a legal risk, educators may decide it is safer not to visit, ask questions, or engage at all.
