Did you know ... The top 12 breeds of dogs that are restricted/excluded by homeowners (and property rental) insurance policies? Read on: https://www.policygenius.com/homeowners-insurance/which-dog-breeds-will-homeowners-insurance-not-cover/

Why? Because a dog bite can cost the property owner (even if not the owner of the dog) thousands of dollars to resolve. If you are a renter and have a dog that's one of these breeds, all is not lost. You can buy your own liability policy and name your landlord as an additional insured, which would cover him/her if there was a dog bite incident, and it would help alleviate any protest your landlord would have about the breed of your dog.

The most commonly excluded dog breeds are rottweilers, pit bulls, Dobermans pinschers, German shepherds, chow chows, and many wolf breeds.

New law coming re security deposits in CA, limited to 1 month's rent! Including any pet deposit. California to limit security deposits to 1 month's rent under new law signed by Newsom - CBS San Francisco

Renters in California will no longer be asked for a security deposit larger than one month's rent, under a bill signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Law for Paws is officially a 501c3 charitable organization. It's a huge step because I was told by some shelters that they can refer owners to me who are being forced by landlords to surrender their animals but they'd rather keep them with them if possible. I do not charge for my time to provide legal guidance to tenants who are facing housing discrimination and eviction because their landlord is denying their request for an accommodation to have an assistance animal. If you become aware of any tenants in that situation or who would like to know more about their rights regarding assistance animals, like emotional support animals, please direct them to me. If I can't fix the shelters and the overcrowding there and euthanasia of adoptable animals maybe I can get in front of this and help some animals not get there in the first place.

A practical resource that I want to share that has great information, including where you can buy insurance for breeds that are often restricted by landlords, is http://www.keepyourpet.com/ They do not talk about ESA laws, but they cover pretty much every other issue that could cause a pet owner to have to give up a beloved family member.
