The report’s findings, [California Supreme Court Justice Goodwin Liu] said, turns the Asian “model minority” myth on its head. “People think Asian Americans are doing so well. But when you look at the top rungs, Asian Americans aren’t doing well at all."

Legal Lessons of the Japanese Internment 75 Years after Executive Order 9066
Thursday, February 23, 2017
12 noon - 1:15 pm MT
Sandra Day O'Connor U.S. District Courthouse
Phoenix, Arizona

Seventy-five years ago, following the attack on Pearl Harbor and as the United States entered World War II, Presidential directives issued in February 1942 led to curfews and the forcible relocation of more than 100,000 people of Japanese descent to internment camps. The Federal Bar Association's Phoenix Chapter panel will discuss the U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Hirabayashi v. United States and Korematsu v United States, which upheld criminal convictions for two young Japanese American men who defied the curfews and the relocation policies, and the subsequent decisions reversing those convictions. The panel will also discuss the relevance of this history and these decisions today as our nation combats terrorism.
