Did you receive an IRS CP2000 Letter? Don’t panic — but don’t ignore it either.

A CP2000 isn’t an audit — it’s a notice from the IRS saying that the income or payments reported on your tax return don’t match what others (like your employer or bank) reported to the IRS.

• Unreported 1099 or investment income
• Employer reporting errors
• Data mismatches between IRS and your return

The CP2000 is a proposal, not a bill. You have the right to review it, agree or disagree, and respond. But if you don’t act quickly or the IRS doesn’t accept your explanation, it can escalate into a Statutory Notice of Deficiency — your final chance to dispute the issue before the IRS assesses additional tax.

Facing an IRS Audit or Dispute? The “Hazards of Litigation” Could Be Your Best Ally.

Most taxpayers don’t realize that the IRS Appeals Office often settles cases based on something called Hazards of Litigation — basically, the real risks the IRS and the taxpayer face if the case goes to court.

If records are incomplete, or the law is unclear, Appeals weighs those risks and can often reach a fair compromise without you ever stepping into court.

One classic example: the Cohan Rule, from a famous 1930 Broadway producer’s case. It allows courts to estimate certain deductions when perfect receipts aren’t available — though strict substantiation rules under IRC § 274(d) mean travel and similar expenses must still have proper records.
