ICYMI: In July, Megan Bonanni, Danielle Canepa, and Kevin Carlson secured a major win for Michigan survivors.

The Michigan Court of Appeals revived Marian Ippel's childhood sexual abuse lawsuit against a Grand Rapids church, reversing a Kent County Circuit Court dismissal and confirming that survivors whose claims were still valid when Michigan's 2018 sexual abuse reforms took effect are entitled to file until age 28.

In a statement featured in Michigan Advance, Megan, Danielle, and Kevin shared:

“For survivors of childhood sexual abuse in Michigan, this decision confirms that the doors the legislature opened in 2018 cannot be quietly closed. We are proud to stand with Marian and will continue fighting until she gets the justice she deserves.”

Partner Megan Bonanni spoke with Reuters discussing the prevalence and impact of sealed court records.

Over decades of representing survivors of sexual assault and abuse, Megan has seen defendants seek to keep information from public view. As she shared with Reuters, ensuring the public knows about systemic abuse within institutions is a battle worth fighting.
