As you probably know, fraud and identity theft are becoming more and more common. I receive several threatening texts each week advising that my Peach Pass account is overdue. The last two were from Turkey.
To help reduce our chances of having a fraud or identity theft issue, we decided to freeze our credit with the three national credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experion). It is easy to do and will definitely make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Also, and next time you need credit, it is fairly easy to “unfreeze” it long enough to secure financing for your new car, home, etc. You just ask what credit bureau the car (or mortgage) finance company checks and you can “unfreeze” it for 24 or 48 hours so that they can pull your credit and you can secure your financing.
If you are interested, Clark Howard (Consumer and Money Expert at WSB News) is a big advocate of credit freezes and discusses it more on his website.

A credit freeze is the best way to protect yourself from identity theft. Here's how to freeze your credit with Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.

Some great news for Seniors! Did you know that Georgians aged 62 or older can take college courses or even get a degree (undergraduate and some graduate programs) for free at any of the colleges and universities within the University of Georgia system? Some small fees may apply but the tuition is “covered” if you are interested in going back to school or even auditing a class or two for fun. Chandler

Here are the details (see Section 4.2.1.9 of the Board of Regents Policy Manual for the University of Georgia System):

Pursuant to the provisions of the Georgia Constitution, the USG establishes the following rules with respect to enrollment of persons 62 years of age or older in USG programs. To be eligible for enrollment under this provision such persons:
1. Must be residents of Georgia, 62 years of age or older at the time of registration, and shall present a birth certificate or other comparable written documentation of age to enable the institution to determine eligibility.
2. May enroll as a regular or auditing student in courses offered for resident credit on a “space available” basis without payment of fees, except for supplies, laboratory or shop fees.
3. Shall meet all USG and institution undergraduate or graduate admission requirements. However, institutions may exercise discretion in exceptional cases where circumstances indicate that certain requirements such as high school graduation and minimum test scores are inappropriate. In those instances involving discretionary admission institutions will provide diagnostic methods to determine whether or not participation in Learning Support will be required prior to enrollment in regular credit courses. Reasonable prerequisites may be required in certain courses.
4. Shall have all usual student and institutional records maintained. However, institutions will not report such students for budgetary purposes.
5. Must meet all USG, institution, and legislated degree requirements if they are degree-seeking students.
6. May not enroll in dental, medical, veterinary, or law schools under the provisions of this policy.

Last Spring, my family and I were driving along a two-lane road near a small town in Scotland. Suddenly, an elderly driver crossed the center line and headed straight for us. With nowhere to go and no time to react, she hit us head-on. While we were all shaken up, thankfully we were only going 25 mph and no one was seriously hurt. We were extremely lucky.
We hope that you are never in a serious crash. However, and if you find yourself in a situation like that, you may have legal questions and you may very well need legal help. We are here and will be happy to take your call. We will be glad to answer any of your questions --- at no charge. In our case, we were fortunate that the Scottish police were very helpful, cited her and our rental car insurance company took care of the rest. Sometimes it is more complicated. If you need us, please know that we are always here to help.

Some good news for those of us who use rideshare companies like Lyft and Uber (or are injured by a Lyft or Uber driver). Starting July 1, 2023, a new Georgia law (O.C.G.A. § 33-1-24) requires them to carry at least $1 Million in liability insurance coverage for bodily injury or death, and $1 Million in uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage. In short, this law does two things. First, it is designed to protect you if you are a passenger in a Lyft or Uber vehicle and hurt in a crash in Georgia. Second, it is also intended to protect you if you are hit and injured by a Lyft or Uber driver. It would be nice to see this law expanded to include all commercial vehicles. Thanks, Chandler
