I am introducing a new part of my business. I have seen many ads for trusts (not estate planning) for $500, $695, $750. I've had clients who fell for these and brought their trust to me because they just did not look right. Most of them did not have all the proper documents to make the estate plan work. I re-did most of them. Well, to make a long story longer, I found that by using remote meetings I can provide the same personal, professional (real) Estate Planning and still save people money.

You all remember this sign? I took on a new client this week. The client had a 6 year old trust they wanted to update. Well, guess what? It was a $695 special trust done after a lunch seminar. It was one of the worst trust documents I have ever read in my 32 years as a trust Attorney. The distribution of assets was all wrong, no tax planning, a half page paragraph that was one long run on sentance. I had to read it three times to figure out what it said. To top it off, the property transfer deed was hand written. I could go on but suffice to say, stay away from these bargain basement trust mills. You owe it to your family to get your Estate Planning done right.

My latest Estate Minute

I want to bring up an issue that has come up a couple times just this month. The best compliment you can give me is referring family and friends to me who need to get their estate planning done. The problem is how to make a referral. I’ve had two situations this month where a family member called and asked if their loved one had called me to set up the estate planning. The first was a daughter who said her mother had a stroke. Sometime back a friend gave my phone number to the mother to call me. Well, she never did. Now the family may end up in court to have a conservatorship done. The other was a son whose father just died. Again, the father had been given my number but never called. Now they are in probate. I would estimate that maybe one in ten of these kinds of referrals will ever call me. The upside for me is my name and number are out there. You never know who will pick it up and call.
So, what can you do? The best way is to ask your friend if it is OK for you to give me their phone number or other contact information. I will call them, answer any questions and give them information they might need. From that point I will do whatever they would like to do. No pressure. Hopefully they will do the right thing and get the estate planning done.
