Santa Fe Public Library is working with fathers at the Penitentiary of New Mexico to unite families through literacy in a program called “Fathers As Readers” (FAR). In this workshop participants read aloud and are recorded on a CD disc. The CD and the corresponding book are then mailed to the children that participants have chosen. Children who receive a literacy package from their father or grandfather are
encouraged to read while also feeling a special closeness with their father or grandfather.
In June 2024, Santa Fe Public Library began the first of many educational sessions working with fathers residing in Penitentiary of New Mexico. Many participants in the first group of fathers are from the Santa Fe Public Library’s book club that participated in the 2024 Santa Fe Reads, many more are interested in participating and have begun the process to join our upcoming FAR programming. Librarians are assisting the fathers or grandfathers with how to read to children and engage in story time. Fathers or grandfathers select a book (donated by Friends of the Santa Fe Public Library) for their child and practice how to read them. The end goal is to record the story and then the book along with the recording will be sent to their
child.
The meetings consist of orientation around children’s story time, practice reading sessions, where we learn together how to make the story engaging, and lastly the final recording session. Librarians assist with helping inmates in selecting the right book for their child, guidance on how to read to a child, as well as helping build the inmates’ literacy skill levels.
Santa Fe Public Library is pleased to offer “Fathers As Readers” as part of our dedication to education through library services. This program is a positive way to proactively encourage literacy appreciation among our incarcerated population in Santa Fe and their families, as well as maintain and nurture connections between fathers and the children in their lives.
