He's 100% accurate! Great message about the grave situation our country has gotten itself into fighting the "war on drugs". That has resulted in the extreme case of mass incarceration. The US has become the #1 jailer in the world, 88% of those incarcerated stem from minor drug offenses. US Prisons are the largest drug treatment & mental health facility's world wide. That is unacceptable & not their intended purpose. 1.6 million people are jailed each year in the US on simple possession offenses and over half of those are marijuana possession. Marijuana is a drug that over 100,000,000 have experimented with. We need to realize that this isn't a "them" issue. This is the majority of the US being negatively affected with the current model. Why are we continuing to 'fight' a war that in reality is not against drugs, it's against our fellow Americans... Why can we not stop the insanity and try a health based approach over the criminal one? Decriminalizing all drug possession has been proven to actually solve the problem. We have to change the stigma and the approach because The current system has NOT decreased addiction or crime AT ALL in any positive way over a 40 year span of "war". A war that costs Trillions of dollars for something that isn't effective in any way! In fact its harmful overall. Addiction and crime overall have increased in the current way of solving the drug problem. Look into the studies on Portugal pre and post stats where they decriminalized all drugs, from Cannabis to Crack. The proven results are astounding and show an inarguable solution to a problem. We MUST broaden our views for the greater good!
