In 2019, our state government extended the statute of limitations for survivors of sexual abuse to bring claims against their abusers. Yesterday, thanks to that law change, a brave survivor – our client – prevailed over her abuser – her grandfather – in a lawsuit after years of being denied access to justice.

Keefe Law Firm attorneys John Keefe and Chris Keating settled the lawsuit, which was filed in state court earlier this year. Our client received a six-figure settlement funded through a homeowner’s insurance policy and the sale of the abuser’s home. More important, the defendant admitted to the terrible acts as alleged in the Complaint. After more than a decade of gaslighting, the truth was finally told. Justice was finally served.

Prior to the change to the statute of limitations, our client was time barred from bringing a claim and holding her abuser accountable; the statute of limitations had run years ago. Last year’s legislation opened the doors to New Jersey’s courts for our client and many others facing similar injustice.

Although we cannot change the past, we can assist our clients in moving forward. It was an honor to serve as counsel for our courageous client in this case.
