A new VA watchdog report found that more than 142,000 post-9/11 veterans who screened positive for a possible deployment-related traumatic brain injury and agreed to further evaluation never received one. The VA Office of Inspector General found that while VA screened millions of veterans and generally offered follow-up evaluations when needed, major gaps remained in scheduling, referrals, and timely care. In some cases, veterans canceled or did not respond. In others, VA staff never placed the required referral. VA has agreed to make changes aimed at improving referrals, follow-up, and access to TBI specialists.
