Tina Nadeau, director of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers - MACDL, said in an email Friday that confidential information involving victims of crimes and people suspected or accused of committing crimes “should be protected fiercely.”

She said she couldn’t speak to how the disclosure happened and that she couldn’t speculate about what might happen as the cases mentioned in the document progress.

A spokesperson for the attorney general said staff notified victims of the possibility that 'inadvertent recipients' might make the information public.

This page is really interesting, as someone who is watching in horror at how a recent spate of gun-related youth violence in Lewiston has been portrayed via horrific racism and a complete lack of self-awareness regarding the city’s own history.

Stray bullets again in 1947 when 3 youth nearly kill Raymond Sirois of South Temple Street. He catches a stray bullet in the back. Considered accidental. No charges pressed.

Tina Nadeau, executive director of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers - MACDL, said consequences of these violations still apply to the defendants, “who are being deprived of their right to have access to all information that could be used against them, thus depriving them of their right to prepare a defense and a right to a fair trial.”

“This flies in the face of what we all should understand justice to mean,” Nadeau said.

The high court declined to overturn a man's convictions for unlawful sexual touching and indecent conduct after his attorney said the state disclosed more than 3,000 pages of evidence less than 2 weeks before trial.

A Maine man whose yearslong plight in the Maine State Prison’s isolation unit was chronicled in a 2021 Bangor Daily News investigation has settled a lawsuit against the state for $250,000.

Zachary Swain accused the state prison officials of violating his constitutional rights by subjecting him to an “endless cycle of punishment” instead of treating his mental health issues.
