Sometimes all it takes is a little help.

At McGill Law, we believe our role isn't to make decisions for our clients. It's to empower them with the information, advocacy, and support they need to make the decisions that are right for themselves and their families.

We're proud to be featured in The Scout Guide Omaha Vol. 10.

The Scout Guide Omaha is a beautifully curated publication that celebrates the local businesses, people, and places that help make our community unique. We're honored to be included alongside so many individuals and organizations contributing to the fabric of Omaha.

Thank you to The Scout Guide Omaha for the feature and for supporting local businesses through connection, storytelling, and community.

Long before LGBTQ+ studies became a recognized academic field, University of Nebraska professor Louis Crompton helped create one of the nation's earliest university courses focused on homosexuality.

In 1970, Crompton co-developed the Proseminar in Homophile Studies at UNL, helping bring LGBTQ+ experiences and history into the classroom at a time when such conversations were often met with controversy.

His work challenged people to see LGBTQ+ individuals not as stereotypes or subjects of study, but as people whose lives, stories, and experiences deserved understanding and respect.

As we continue our Nebraska Pride History series, we recognize Louis Crompton's role in expanding visibility, education, and conversation right here in Nebraska.

The conversations Louis Crompton helped start continue today. As we celebrate Pride Month, we're proud to recognize the Nebraskans who helped expand understanding, visibility, and acceptance, and to support LGBTQ+ individuals and families throughout Nebraska and Iowa.

Sometimes adoption is about growing a family.

Sometimes it's about protecting the family that already exists.

Whether it involves a stepparent who has been there for years, a relative providing stability and care, an adult formalizing a lifelong parent-child relationship, or parents seeking additional legal protection for their family, adoption can provide security, recognition, and peace of mind for the future.

Families are built in many different ways, and every family deserves to feel protected.

Our adoption attorneys work with individuals, parents, couples, and families across Nebraska and Iowa on stepparent adoptions, relative adoptions, adult adoptions, and confirmation and affirmation adoptions for LGBTQ+ families.

McGill Law helps families across Nebraska and Iowa with stepparent adoptions, adult adoptions, confirmation adoptions, LGBTQ+ family adoption matters, and legal parentage protections.

On June 29, 1985, approximately 60 people gathered in downtown Omaha for the city's first Candlelight Pride Walk, organized by the Imperial Court of Nebraska (ICON). The event was held to honor those who had been lost to AIDS and to bring visibility to a community that was too often overlooked.

Three years later, Omaha hosted its first official Pride Parade and Festival. What began as a small gathering of remembrance has grown into the vibrant Heartland Pride celebrations that bring thousands of people together each year.

As Vince Percy, an early Omaha Pride organizer, reflected:

"The growth has been remarkable, but the journey is so much further."

This Pride Month, we honor the individuals who helped build visibility, community, and belonging in Nebraska, often at a time when doing so required tremendous courage.

McGill Law is proud to support LGBTQ+ individuals, couples, parents, and families throughout Nebraska and Iowa, and we're excited to be part of Heartland Pride again this year.

|| PLEASE NOTE NEW LOCATION for Second Saturday Divorce Workshops Lincoln! Beginning in July, our workshops will be located at the new McGill Law location: 4700 Valley Road, Lincoln, Nebraska! ||

Summer often brings a little more quiet, a break in routine, and time to think about the parts of life people have been trying to hold together. For some, it is also the first time they begin seriously asking what divorce could mean for their family, finances, home, or future.

Second Saturday Divorce Workshops in Lincoln was created for that moment. Join us on Saturday, July 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
This small, private workshop is designed for individuals who are beginning to consider divorce or quietly trying to understand what their options might look like. Attendance is intentionally limited to create a more intimate and comfortable environment for conversation and questions.

You’ll hear from local professionals who work in the legal, financial, and emotional aspects of divorce every day, including Taylor Matthias, Supervising Attorney of McGill Law, PC, LLO - Lincoln, Nebraska, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst and financial advisor Katie Bruno of Morey & Quinn Wealth Partners, and certified divorce and relationship coach Tammy Oswald of Tammy Oswald Coaching.

Together, they will walk through the different paths available and help explain what those choices can mean in real terms for your family, finances, children, home, and future.

Whether you are early in the process or simply looking for information, you will leave with a clearer understanding of your options and what thoughtful next steps could look like.

Not every challenge to a family court order involves a modification.

While a modification is based on circumstances that have changed since an order was entered, an appeal asks a higher court to review whether the law was applied correctly in the original case.

Appeals are not a second trial. They focus on the existing court record, legal arguments, and the decisions made by the trial court.

Our attorneys represent clients in Nebraska family law appeals involving divorce, custody, parenting time, child support, protection orders, paternity matters, and other family law issues.

Whether pursuing an appeal or responding to one filed by the other party, understanding your options is an important first step.

Help starts here.

Somewhere inside every woman is the little girl she once was.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve shared a few childhood photos of the women behind McGill Law and the people they would grow up to become.

Today, we’re closing out the series with Sarah Jones, Intake Specialist at McGill Law.

Before she became someone people trusted with their stories, she was a little girl in polka dots with a story of her own.

Today, Sarah is often one of the first people clients speak with when they contact our firm. Her warmth, empathy, and ability to make people feel heard help set the tone for the care and support they can expect throughout their experience with McGill Law.

Whether someone reaches out to our Omaha or Lincoln office, Sarah helps guide them through those first steps with compassion, professionalism, and genuine care.

We’re grateful for everything Sarah brings to our team and the clients she serves every day.

Born in Red Cloud, Nebraska, Willa Cather became one of the most influential American writers of the twentieth century and remains an important figure in LGBTQ+ literary history.

Her writing explored identity, longing, belonging, love, and the emotional landscape of the Great Plains with honesty and tenderness that still resonate today.

At its core, family law is about people, relationships, identity, and the deeply human need to live authentically and feel understood.

This Pride Month, we are reflecting on Nebraska voices and histories that helped shape conversations around identity, connection, and belonging.

Happy Pride Month from McGill Law!

Pride Month is a celebration of visibility, authenticity, community, and the right to live openly and fully as yourself.

LGBTQ+ family law is an important part of our practice and one of the ways our firm is uniquely positioned within Nebraska and Iowa family law. Our team regularly works with LGBTQ+ individuals, couples, parents, and families in matters involving divorce, custody, parenting, adoption, estate planning, name changes, and other family law needs, with an understanding that these experiences can involve additional legal, personal, and emotional considerations.

The work we do is rooted in the belief that people deserve to feel respected, protected, and supported within the legal system exactly as they are. We believe families deserve to be recognized. We believe identity matters. We believe compassionate advocacy and inclusive spaces matter too.

We are also grateful for the advocates, healthcare providers, educators, artists, nonprofits, and community organizations helping create connection, safety, visibility, and belonging throughout our local communities every day.

This month and throughout the year, we are proud to support and celebrate LGBTQ+ individuals, families, and communities.

We are grateful for organizations including OutNebraska, Heartland Pride, Star City Pride Events, Omaha ForUs, PFLAG Omaha and Pride Health Clinic which continue to create support, advocacy, healthcare access, education, and community locally.

If there are additional organizations, support groups, healthcare providers, or community resources you believe deserve recognition or may help others feel supported and connected, we invite you to share them in the comments as well.
