“When no one looks like you, it can feel like you are not welcome or that you do not belong.”

In “A Latina in the Law: A Brief Retrospective,” Senior Associate Attorney Ashley Palma, Esq. writes about entering the legal profession as a Latina, often being the only person of color in the courtroom, and how those experiences have shaped the attorney she is today.

For Ashley, representation is about more than who is standing beside you in the courtroom. It is also about whether the person sitting across from her feels respected enough to tell the truth about their life, ask questions without embarrassment and trust that they will be taken seriously.

A little friendly competition, a lot of laughs and a Tuesday afternoon together.

This week, our team stepped away from the office for an afternoon at Topgolf. It was a chance to spend time together outside of work, have some fun and enjoy each other’s company.

We believe taking care of our team matters. When people feel supported, appreciated and connected to one another, they do better work and bring more of themselves to the people we serve.

And yes, we discovered we have a few golfers among us. A few others were mostly there for the food and company. Both approaches were fully supported.

Taking time to enjoy each other outside the office is part of how we build a team that works well together and shows up well for the people we serve.

We’re closing early today to celebrate our team.

Our team gives so much to our clients, their work and each other. Today, we’re making a little time to celebrate them and everything they contribute to McGill Law.

Yesterday was CIRA Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement's Welcome Fest, and we were proud to sponsor this celebration of the people and cultures that make Omaha home.

The afternoon was full of incredible food, music, dancing, art, local makers and community organizations, with people from across Omaha coming together for Welcoming Week.

We believe immigrants and refugees make Nebraska stronger. Their cultures, traditions, businesses, families and stories are part of the fabric of our communities, and they deserve to be welcomed, supported and valued.

McGill Law, PC, LLO founder Jodie McGill serves on CIRA’s Board of Directors, and supporting CIRA’s work with immigrant and refugee families across Nebraska means a great deal to our firm.

Thank you to CIRA Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement for creating an afternoon that brought so many people, cultures and organizations together.

What’s in a name? Identity.

A name is more than what's printed on a driver's license or birth certificate. It's how we introduce ourselves to the world, and everyone deserves to have theirs respected.

Last Saturday, McGill Law attorneys Ashley Palma, Emily Dawkins and Bri Cotton volunteered at Legal Aid of Nebraska's free Adult Name Change Clinic, hosted by Omaha ForUs.

For many people, including LGBTQIA+ and gender diverse individuals, having legal documents that reflect who they are can be especially meaningful. The clinic helps eligible adults with the paperwork, court requirements and costs that can make the name change process difficult to access.

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect when seeking legal services.

A big thank you to Legal Aid of Nebraska for providing free civil legal assistance to eligible Nebraskans, and to Omaha ForUs for creating affirming spaces, programs and resources for our LGBTQIA+ community. We're proud that Ashley, Emily and Bri gave their Saturday to support this important work!

A recent Google review of Theresa Loughran, partner and Collaborative Divorce attorney with McGill Law, PC, LLO and mediator with McGill Mediation, came from someone who recommended her to a friend. After hearing about her friend's consultation, she shared these incredibly kind words.

Last Thursday was Pride Night at Werner Park with the Omaha Storm Chasers!

We were proud to table alongside nonprofits, businesses and organizations doing important work in our community, and we had some really good conversations throughout the night.

We also talked with people about name changes, adoption, estate planning and other legal services that can be especially important for LGBTQ+ individuals and families.

The Take Meow’t to the Ball Game theme brought plenty of cats, and the Storm Chasers mascot even stopped by our table.

There was a rain delay, but we stayed through it and got to hear the River City Mixed Chorus sing the national anthem before the game.

We loved having the chance to connect with people, share resources and spend the evening alongside so many others who support LGBTQ+ individuals and families in our community.

Hispanic Heritage Month began this week, celebrating the history, stories and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities across the country and here in Nebraska.

One of those stories belongs to Cecilia Olivarez Huerta.

“We, as Mexican Americans, have pride in who we are and in our contributions to this great state of Nebraska.”

Cecilia knew something about making her voice heard.

Born in Bridgeport, Nebraska, in 1944, she spent decades advocating for Mexican American and Latino communities across the state.

For 14 years, she served as executive director of the Nebraska Mexican American Commission now the Nebraska Commission on Latino-Americans, working on issues including education, employment, housing, public policy and civil rights.

She brought community concerns directly to lawmakers and spoke openly about discrimination and inequity.

She once described herself as a “high energy, gregarious ear bender.” A fitting description for a woman who spent decades speaking up for people whose voices were too often overlooked.

The belief that people deserve to be heard is one that carries through our work every day. Cecilia spent her life putting that belief into action.

Cecilia died in 2019, leaving behind a long history of advocacy and public service in Nebraska.

Her voice, and the voices she helped bring forward, remain part of our state’s story.
