Now is a Good Time for Employers to Implement or Revise Severe Weather Policy

The spring storm season is upon us. Over the course of the last several weeks, several Oklahoma counties were hit by tornadoes, severe storms, and straight-line winds. Add that to the fires and earthquakes, and you have the perfect time to implement or revise your inclement weather policies. How will your employees be alerted to office closures during inclement weather; what processes do you have in place for monitoring potentially bad weather that develops during the work day; can and how should employees work from home; will or must employees be paid for office closures during inclement weather? With the summer months fast approaching, managers and supervisors are cringing in the anticipation of implementing and enforcing a summer dress code. And for good reason. Summer is the time of year when many people are more relaxed. People enjoy long weekends, vacations, and lazy days. During the hot summer days, employees often prefer to wear the hottest trends, (i.e., crop tops, halter-tops, maxi dresses, graphic T-shirts), brighter colors, lighter-fabric, and even flip-flops – at work. Yesterday, April 23, 2015, marked the 22nd anniversary for the national “Take Our Children to Work Day”. Founded in 1993 by Gail Steinem and The Ms. Foundation for Women, this clever non-profit educational program encourages individuals the opportunity to invite their sons/daughters, and relatives to work for one day to shadow their parents. In doing so, kids learn valuable (yet subtle) lifelong lessons on the importance of team work, communication, and (hopefully) by spending a day in the life of a working adult, they develop a new profound respect and appreciation of their parents’ work!
