One of three cases that make up the Marshall Trilogy. States have no authority or jurisdiction on Indian Land.

On this day in history: The third of three court cases (the “Marshall Trilogy”) that become the foundation of American Indian law is decided. Samuel Worcester, a white missionary living on Cherokee lands, brings a suit to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of the Cherokee Nation. The state of Georgia had demanded that Worcester obtain a state license to live on Cherokee land. Chief Justice John Marshall rules for the Cherokee, finding that the U.S. is legally bound to treat the tribes “as nations, respect their rights, and manifest a firm purpose to afford that protection which treaties stipulate.”

“Indian nations had always been considered as distinct, independent political communities, retaining their original natural rights, as the undisputed possessors of the soil ... The very term nation so generally applied to them, means ‘a people distinct from others.’” —U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, Worcester v. Georgia, 31 U.S. (6 Pet.) 515, 561 (1832). Other cases in the “Marshall Trilogy” are Johnson v. McIntosh (1823) and Cherokee Nation v. Georgia (1831).

In my opinion, Tribes should be allowed to operate and regulate cannabis on tribal land just like the states do. This is no different than casino gaming. If states allow it for some then it shouldn't be denied to Tribes.

Bay Mills Indian Community, based in the rural eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan, broke into the cannabis market as a way of diversifying the tribe’s economy during COVID-19.

If you still have to wonder, this is why athletes continue to kneel - to bring attention to the blatant racism that continues to seep from everywhere, even a sports commentator caught on a hot mic at a high school girls basketball game.

An announcer for an Oklahoma girls’ basketball game called one team by a racial slur as they knelt then blamed the incident on high blood sugar

Amazing the non-stop battles in courts that Indian tribes face just to provide safety and law enforcement on their OWN LAND!!!!

Tribal nations were concerned about "bad men" when they negotiated treaties. Will the U.S. Supreme Court uphold those promises?
