With his new shop in St. Ann, St. Louis educator and hip-hop artist Byron Waters — also known as Zeus Rebel Waters — is uniting his three passions under one roof: music, community and sweets.
Sweets by Sweet Waters opened its doors in January. The initial idea was to open a doughnut shop, Waters said, but when he found a storefront that was sectioned off into three different spaces, he began to envision a third space for people of all ages to build community and work on creative projects.
“I wanted to put something together — [a place] children could come be a part of [and] to see somebody from the community, like them, that didn't give up and put something beautiful together,” he said.
In addition to doughnuts, sweets, hot dogs and nachos, Sweets by Sweet Waters offers rental space including a rehearsal stage and a studio for recording podcasts. On some Friday nights, Waters hosts a “Dope Beats and Donuts” open mic where community members can sing, perform music, do standup comedy or other types of performance.
