The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that tax season will open on Monday, January 29, 2018. The IRS will begin accepting paper and electronic tax returns that day, with more than 155 million individual tax returns expected to be filed in 2018. This is a week later than had been widely reported.

Every year, taxpayers have questions about early filing. Many software companies and tax professionals will accept tax returns before opening day, January 29, 2018. That doesn't mean that your tax return will be filed early. Those software companies and tax professionals will submit returns when IRS systems open.

Although the IRS will begin accepting both electronic and paper tax returns on January 29, 2018, paper tax returns will be processed later, in mid-February, as system updates continue. The IRS strongly encourages people to file their tax returns electronically for faster refunds

PATH Act may delay refunds for early filers

Because of a new law, the IRS has to hold tax refunds that include Earned Income Tax Credit and Additional Child Tax Credit until February 15, 2017—with the week of February 27 being the earliest they expect those refunds to be available in taxpayers’ bank accounts or debit cards.

This law, Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act of 2015, helps detect and prevent tax fraud, and the delay in refunds allows the IRS to make sure taxpayers are claiming the credits properly and given what they’re owed.

Most taxpayers won’t be impacted by this and the IRS expects that the majority of tax refunds (more than 9 out of 10) will be issued in 21 days or less from acceptance.

The IRS encourages taxpayers to file as soon as possible regardless of their tax prep method, or if claiming Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit since they’ll still begin accepting and processing tax returns once they’re received.

Take Steps Now for Tax Filing Season

The IRS also reminds taxpayers that they should keep copies of their prior-year tax returns for at least three years. Taxpayers who are changing tax software products this filing season will need their adjusted gross income from their 2015 tax return in order to file electronically. The Electronic Filing Pin is no longer an option. Taxpayers can visit IRS.Gov/GetReady for more tips on preparing to file their 2016 tax return

The IRS reminds taxpayers that a new law requires the IRS to hold refunds claiming the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC) until Feb. 15. In addition, the IRS wants taxpayers to be aware it will take several days for these refunds to be released and processed through financial institutions. Factoring in weekends and the President’s Day holiday, the IRS cautions that many affected taxpayers may not have actual access to their refunds until the week of Feb. 27.

The Internal Revenue Service announced today that the nation’s tax season will begin Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, and reminded taxpayers claiming certain tax credits to expect a longer wait for refunds.

Missing Form W-2? IRS Can Help

IRS Tax Tip 2016-12, February 3, 2016

Most people get their W-2 forms by the end of January. Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, shows your income and the taxes withheld from your pay for the year. You need it to file an accurate tax return.

If you haven’t received your form by mid-February, here’s what you should do:

Contact your Employer. Ask your employer (or former employer) for a copy. Be sure they have your correct address.

Call the IRS. If you are unable to get a copy from your employer, you may call the IRS at 800-829-1040 after Feb. 23. The IRS will send a letter to your employer on your behalf. You’ll need the following when you call:
Your name, address, Social Security number and phone number;
Your employer’s name, address and phone number;
The dates you worked for the employer; and
An estimate of your wages and federal income tax withheld in 2015. You can use your final pay stub for these amounts.

File on Time. Your tax return is normally due on or before April 18, 2016. Use Form 4852, Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, if you don't get your W-2 in time to file. Estimate your wages and taxes withheld as best as you can. If you can’t get it done by the due date, ask for an extra six months to file. Use Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to request more time. You can also e-file a request for more time. Do it for free with IRS Free File.

Correct if Necessary. You may need to correct your tax return if you get your missing W-2 after you file. If the tax information on the W-2 is different from what you originally reported, you may need to file an amended tax return. Use Form 1040X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return, to make the change.
