Sometimes the greatest Father’s Day gifts come in the form of time spent with family and memories created. This past week I had the pleasure of spending time with my oldest chasing black bears in the Clearwater Forest of North Central Idaho. This is my tenth year visiting/meeting with old clients and hunting one of the remotest states in the lower 48. Getting to film my daughter take her first bear at thirteen yards off the ground was a memory I’ll cherish forever.

Shot the Clout round for the very first time while at Outdoor Nationals here in Decatur, AL. Had the only wooden bow/ longbow in this competition. Once I got my flight arc down I started putting them in the Clout. I didn't win but there were quite a few metal sighted/risered archers that finished behind me.

Sometimes age catches up with you when you're in a roomful of young archers giving it their all. Final end of my Friday shoot was a perfect 30, just wish my second half that night was as good. Took a "break" today and found a little archery shop in nearby Bryan, Texas and decided to work on various aspects of my form. Finally got a text from my oldest that they were almost done during their afternoon session. As I packed up and looked down at the counter I did a double take, 407 arrows shot in one afternoon. Maybe I'm not that old after all.

Archery Challenge: 30 metres without sights and stabilisers! | Win&Win AFR

Many ask me what it's like to shoot a longbow or barebow (a bow without sights) and how difficult is it. Here's a great example of three Olympians who remove their sights off their bows and attempt this at 30 meters. Enjoy!

Davis, Ryals and Stevenson are 2014 Coaches of the Year

I'm very honored to know and call Kathleen Stevenson a friend. She was named one of Team USA's "Coach of the Year". She has coached archers who've made the USA Jr. Team and she's got two that made the Jr. Dream Team, last year. Kathleen is the exception when it comes to coaches because she's also both an indoor and outdoor national champion. I don't know of any coaches that can boast those credentials. Thank You Kathleen for being a wonderful mentor and coach.

USA Archery's 2014 Coaches of the Year have helped inspire many young athletes to success.

Contrary to the cliché you can’t teach and “old” dog new tricks I’d venture to say I’m living proof you CAN!

I was scheduled to attend USA Archery’s Outdoor Nationals with my oldest and her JOAD team, the Oklahoma Storm, just to see how fierce an Oklahoma Storm front could be in Ohio.

When USA Archery cancelled the Bare Bow division for Outdoor Nationals I was torn, either show up with my Bare Bow or try a whole new discipline, I opted for the latter. Two weeks before Nationals I picked up a full blown Olympic recurve, (Sky TR-7, Black Max Extremes carbon foam limbs and Shibuya sight) familiarized myself with it and drove a thousand miles East to compete in the country’s premier outdoor target tournament.

The adult male recurve division is shot at 70 meters (77 yards) on a 122cm target; the bullseye is 4.75”. After two days of qualification rounds (Thursday and Friday) and 144 scored arrows I made the cut and went into the elimination rounds. Saturday morning I found out I was to go head to head with Jake Kaminski, U.S. Olympian and silver medalist in the 2012 Olympics. A humbling experience to say the least but getting “eliminated” by a U.S. Olympian was worth the price of admission. My final round ranking with USA Archery was 33rd in a field of 71. I’ll be back!

The highlight of trip was watching my oldest, an unknown on the national circuit, make a huge impression. She placed well in qualification and made it to the 1/8th (final 8) round and went head to head with the top seeded archer from Taipei. After five ends, head to head, they were tied. In the one arrow shoot off Taipei won but the coaches that had come up to me during the run up whispering, “we’re all rooting for your daughter” was a huge victory. Her final ranking was 9th in a field of 33. She’ no longer an unknown.

I've always been a fan of "Heavy Metal", just didn't know I'd show it from an Archer's perspective. Sooner State Games (Summer) 2014 is in the books. Every year I add an event, this year was no different. Shot the Recurve 3D on Saturday, came back and shot the Target 900 Sunday morning walked off course at 2:30PM and onto the Field course, finished Field and onto the 3D course, again, and shot Modern Longbow and Longbow (wood arrows). Four Gold (900, Modern Longbow, Longbow Woods, Field) one bronze (Recurve). I haven't been this exhausted since college.

My buddy Tom's BIG cat taken two weeks ago in North Central Idaho. Tom shot this Mt. Lion with an Osage Self Bow (longbow) and stone point. Nothing ever comes easy, this was a culmination of almost eight years of chasing the perfect feline. Congratulations Tom!

Without sounding too cliche here's a picture of Tom's big "Tom" he shot with an Osage selfbow. Beautiful cat that weighed just under 180lbs.
