🚔 LA Begins Activating Speed Cameras, With Fines to Follow
LOS ANGELES - The first automated speed-enforcement cameras became active Monday as part of a citywide program aimed at catching drivers traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit.
📸 By the end of the year, the city expects to install 125 cameras, but there is a mailed warning during the first 60-day period before fines take effect.
When the warning period ends, motorists who drive between 11 to 15 mph over the speed limit will face $50 fines.
Speeds above 15 mph over the limit will get higher penalties.
Today, the first four automated speed-enforcement systems containing eight cameras were installed and began operating in City Council District 5, represented by Councilwoman Katy Yaroslavsky.
The cameras are located at:
🚦La Brea Avenue and First Street,
🚦Fairfax Avenue and Clinton Street,
🚦Melrose and Hayworth Avenues,
🚦La Cienega and Pico Boulevards.
These locations are near schools and along streets with histories of serious traffic crashes. This is part of a five-year pilot program intended to reduce speeding and improve roadway safety.
