M&A used to mean making decisions in the dark.

Acquirers signed deals with limited visibility into a target's contracts. Post-closing surprises were the cost of doing business.

Not anymore.

In a recent Bloomberg Law article, Factor's Nimal Hemelge shares how a global pharmaceutical client used AI to review individual clauses across an entire M&A portfolio — identifying which contracts created deal risk and which needed consents or amendments — in days, not months.

Faster diligence. Fewer post-closing surprises. A cleaner path from signing to ex*****on.

At CLOC, we previewed our new AI Maturity Index, a structured 20-question assessment that benchmarks AI maturity in your organization.

Many legal teams we spoke to at CLOC are using AI to make current work faster, sharper, or easier, but fewer are using it to create genuinely new legal capabilities, services, or operating models.

We have some AI Maturity Index sessions still open over the next few weeks. You walk away with a score, a clear sense of where your team sits versus leading legal departments, and a short PDF summary you can share internally.

AI can make legal work look polished. Polished isn't the same as right.

Most legal teams have AI access, but the question isn't whether your team is using it. It's whether you can see how the work was done and trust it before it reaches a client.

Contract storage isn't intelligence.

Most large enterprises already have a CLM. But organizing contracts is not the same as understanding them.

The real cost of not knowing what's in your paper? Missed risk. Slow decisions. Lost value. Concessions forgotten after signature. Scope creep with no contractual basis. CLM migrations that drag for years because the underlying data is incomplete.

Factor has used AI to isolate 40,000 agreements for litigation defense at a global media company, and to extract key rights data in roughly 1 minute per contract for a global gaming client.

In his Bloomberg Law article, Factor's Nimal Hemelge argues that AI has finally made it affordable to know what's in your contracts. Now, choosing not to know is the riskier decision.

Most legal tech training is about the buttons.

Where do I upload the document? Where do I click? How do I run the report?

GenAI is different. The hard part is not learning the interface; it is learning how to think with a powerful but imperfect collaborator.

As Alex Denniston explained in our recent webinar, it’s about knowing where human judgement belongs. Spotting when an output looks polished but isn't quite right. Building the instinct to interrogate, not just accept.

Prompting is only one part of that.

That is why Sensemaker Academy is built around legal scenarios, guided exercises, and live discussions. Legal professionals test AI on real tasks, see where it works, see where it fails, and build the confidence to supervise the output.

The least useful question a legal leader can ask may soon be: “Did you use AI for this?”

As AI becomes part of everyday legal work, the answer will increasingly be yes.

The better question is: “Can I see how this was done, and do I trust the process?”

In our next Turn AI On webinar, we will look at what good supervision means in the age of AI-enabled legal work, including verification, guardrails, and how to protect quality without slowing delivery.

AI adoption is not just a technical challenge. For lawyers, it can be uncomfortably unfamiliar.

These are people who have spent years building expertise. They are used to being good at what they do. They are valued for judgment, precision, and knowing the answer.

Then suddenly they are asked to become beginners again.

That is one reason generic AI training often falls flat. It assumes people only need instructions. In reality, they also need a safe way to experiment, make mistakes, build intuition, and learn what good looks like.

At our recent webinar, Alex Denniston explained why the teams that make progress create the conditions for confident, responsible use.

Along with structured prompting techniques that reduce the time it takes to review AI outputs, Alex gave practical strategies for making AI outputs easier to trust in everyday legal work, while participants got hands-on with a short interactive verification exercise.
