How Is Bankruptcy Biblical?

They say put your faith in God and your confidence in a good lawyer. The reason is simple. You do everything to be a good father or mother, a good businessperson and a good member of the community. But then you lose your job or you need to quit to care for a sick family member, your business fails or runs into tax problems, your investments sink, you find yourself in an expensive lawsuit or something similar, and suddenly you’re in a position that you never thought you would be in.

This can happen to anyone. For that reason, the Bible states that every 7 years loans must be forgiven. And the person who accepted the loans must be forgiven the same way. When our country was founded, many of our laws came from the Bible and our Constitution says that everyone has the right to seek that same debt forgiveness through the court system. It is illegal for employers to discriminate against you based on having filed for bankruptcy.

Many people seeking debt forgiveness ask about the people on the other side who lose their money when they file bankruptcy. Most of the time, it is wealthy banks, credit card companies and debt buyers who immorally make their money by charging high interest and fees to people they know ahead of time will be unable to pay it back. It’s just a game for them and they make so much money from the people who can and do repay it that they don’t care about those who cannot repay it. Unfortunately there are also some good people who lose money in a bankruptcy, but debt forgiveness is a biblical commandment and the Lord will repay their losses.

My own company lost almost $100,000 from one customer’s bankruptcy and that was money I was counting on. I’m upset every time I think about it. I have had to settle many times with customers who hit hard times and could not pay their full bill. I still had to pay my employees and my rent. So I understand it from all sides, and at times I do fight for my clients to cancel bankruptcies when they are used as a weapon, illegally and immorally. But you are worth more alive than dead financially as well as in the flesh, and it is better for you to get a fresh start once and then be a good member of the community than live in debt and hiding from debt collectors and repo men for the rest of your life.
