Tips to study Acams
1. Start with the exam blueprint
Before reading everything, know the main areas:
* AML foundations: money laundering stages, FATF standards, risk-based approach
* KYC/CDD/EDD: customer identification, beneficial ownership, enhanced due diligence
* AML programs: governance, policies, training, independent testing
* Transaction monitoring & investigations
* Sanctions and international frameworks
* Regulatory reporting (SAR/STR concepts)
Spend more time on high-weight topics.
2. Use active recall (not just reading)
After each chapter:
* Close the book.
* Write: “What are the 5 key concepts?”
* Explain it out loud as if teaching someone.
Example:
Instead of memorizing:
“CDD involves identifying and verifying customers…”
Ask yourself:
“A high-risk NGO opens an account in a conflict country. What steps should the bank take and why?”
ACAMS loves scenario questions.
