Andrea “Dre” Hollingsworth, a deaf mother from North Las Vegas, has been awarded $1.2 million after police arrested her during a 2021 encounter for “not listening” to commands she could not hear.
Body-camera footage showed Hollingsworth repeatedly pointing to her ears and trying to communicate that she was deaf before an officer pulled her from her car and forced her to the ground in front of her daughters. 
Hollingsworth was later released without charges and filed a federal lawsuit claiming officers violated her civil rights and failed to accommodate her disability.
After years of litigation, the city agreed to a $1.2 million settlement and new training for officers on interacting with deaf and hard-of-hearing residents.
