In order to qualify for Naturalization or as commonly referred to as becoming a U.S. Citizen, the applicant must have the fallowing characteristics:

1. Be at least 18 years of age at the moment the application is submitted to the USCIS.

2.Be a Permanent Resident for at least 5 years, or 3 years if you have been married and continue to be married to a U.S. Citizen.

3.Be a person of good moral character

4.Have a basic knowledge of U.S. government, this can be exempted if you have been a Permanent Resident living in the U.S. for over 20 years and are 50 years of age or older, If you are 55 years of age or older then the you only need to have been a Permanent Resident for over 15 years.

5. Take the naturalization test.

5. You take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

A child born to a U.S. citizen parent's or parent may acquire U.S. citizenship at birth if certain conditions are met. This is done by requesting a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate of the country where the child was born. The most important factor for a CRBA is that at least one of the child's parent is a U.S. citizen at the moment of the child's birth.

The birth of the child should be reported as soon as possible in order to obtain a CRBA. This will be the official record of the child's claim to U.S. citizenship. The filling of a CRBA is done through form (DS-240). After filling form DS-240, a two step interview process takes place.

First, one of the child's parent must appear before a consular officer and present evidence of the child's claim to U.S. citizenship. Evidence can take the form of the child's certificate of birth, the U.S. citizen parent passport, certificate of naturalization, among others. After the first interview, a second interview will be scheduled were the child must attend as well as both parent's. The attendance of both parent's is not compulsory but it is highly recommend by the U.S. Embassy. If for any reason, one of the parent's can not attend the interview, then they can sign an notarize form DS-5507, which must be presented at the time of the second interview.

It is important to note that during the same process, the parent's may apply for a U.S. passport for the child. The passport will be processed and later mailed to the child's home address which could later be used for travel to the U.S.
