Were you subjected to gender-motivated violence or abuse while at Rikers Island?
You may have legal options.
Being in custody never took away your rights. You do not need to have reported it at the time. A criminal case is not required. A conviction is not required.
And it may not stop with one person. New York City's Gender-Motivated Violence Act can reach institutions and government agencies that directed, enabled, participated in, or conspired in the harm, including in a city-run facility. A facility's role may matter when it knew about abuse and allowed it to continue.
There is a limited window to come forward. For qualifying NYC claims involving violence before January 9, 2022, that window closes July 29, 2027. The law here is still being decided in the courts, and claims involving the City may carry additional procedural requirements, so understanding your options early matters.
You decide what to share, and when.
