In 1940, the first official Army parachute jump happened at Ft. Moore (previously known as Ft. Benning), Georgia. Now, two airborne divisions operate in the U.S. Army: the 82nd Airborne Division and the 101st Airborne Division. These forces have served in combat, peacekeeping, and humanitarian missions worldwide.

Today is the anniversary of the founding of the Department of Defense, established on August 10th, 1949. Previously, responsibility for our nation's defense was split between the Department of War and the Department of the Navy, both cabinet-level positions established under President George Washington. After the Department of War split into the Department of the Army and the Department of the Air Force, a new, unifying cabinet position needed to be created for the Secretary of Defense to oversee national defense by land, sea, and by air.

The active conflict war of the Cold War era began on June 25, 1950, when North Korean forces invaded South Korea. This conflict lasted for three years and involved troops from various nations, resulting in millions of casualties. National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day honors those who served to fight against the spread of communism during this often-overlooked war and commemorates its end on July 27, 1953.
