Creating a distraction is a great way to take the attention off of the person in need so they can exit the situation.

Pretending to know or need the person who looks uncomfortable is one way you can create a distraction. For example, you can approach someone you don’t know who looks uncomfortable by interrupting the conversation, making meaningful eye content with the person, and asking a question that indicates you know who they are such as, “It’s so great to see you again. How’s your cousin Robby doing?”

You can also start an activity with the person who looks uncomfortable in a group, like calling everyone together for a group picture, starting a game, or asking for help on a project.

Creating distractions can help you engage with the person who looks uncomfortable without direct confrontation, defuse a potentially dangerous situation, and give the person in need an opportunity to leave.

What are other examples you can use to by creating a distraction?

A great way to is by extending support 💙 Extending support is important to ensure the person who is at risk knows that you genuinely care and believe them.

For example, instead of asking questions that place the responsibility for the situation on the victim such as, ” Why didn’t you leave and get help?”, you can offer to be there for them by saying, “If you would like to make a report, I'll be there for you in every way I can.”

You can also extend support by sharing resources. We’ll start! You can call the National S*xual Assault Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE or visit online.rainn.org for free, confidential, anonymous help 24/7.

💙Share some other resources that you’ve found helpful in the comments.

“Being kind releases serotonin, the feel-good hormone that activates your brain’s pleasure center. Being kind makes others feel good, but it makes you feel good, too. Kindness reduces stress and anxiety. Focusing on someone else gives you a break from your own problems. And finally, being kind relieves pain because kindness also releases oxytocin, which reduces inflammation. Kindness leads to better health, which is a great reason to be kind. Also, it’s the right thing to do!”
