Friends,
Hurricane season starts Monday.
We hear so much about preparedness and to have things like canned food, batteries, evacuation plans in order, etc.
But this is also the time to check your homeowners’ policy to ensure you have the coverage you need.
Read through it and consider things like:
- Are the Coverage A limits enough to repair my home?
- Are the Coverage B limits adequate to repair my fencing/sheds/poolhouses?
- Are there coinsurance provisions that will penalize me if my limits are not adequate to rebuild?
- Do I have sublimits for things such as electronics, jewelry, or other items of personal property?
- What is my deductible for a named storm? Is it too high? (They usually range from 2% to 5% of your *limits*, not the amount of your loss)
These are just a few of the questions you should consider.
If you’re concerned about the answer, you can reach out to your agent or insurer directly.
As someone who has seen plenty of folks learn of coverage deficiencies AFTER a loss when little can be done, I can assure you that the best time to review your coverages was yesterday. The next best time is now.
Let’s all hope for a quiet hurricane season and that these discussions are conceptual only. But you most certainly want to be prepared in the event it is not.
