Worn Tires Shrink Your Emergency Swerve Margin

The lean angle available to you in a sudden swerve is directly limited by how much tread your tires have remaining. A tire worn down close to the indicators provides significantly less grip for hard evasive maneuvers compared to fresh rubber, particularly on wet pavement. That reduced margin exists precisely when you need it most.

Most riders wait until after a close call to think about tire condition. By then, the risk has already been taken. Make it routine to inspect tread depth and air pressure before you ride, not after a situation forces you to realize the grip wasn't there when you needed it.

Motorcycles respond to your visual focus in ways that can feel almost automatic. When you stare at an obstacle you're trying to miss, your body steers the bike toward it without conscious input. Your hands follow your eyes, and fixating on the danger turns you into a magnet for exactly what you hoped to avoid.

The solution is direct and effective. As soon as you commit to an evasive maneuver, shift your gaze to the open space you want to reach, not the hazard itself. Train yourself to focus on your escape path, and your motorcycle will naturally track in that direction. Your vision guides the bike more than you might realize.

These two skills are often grouped together in training, but they solve completely different problems. Braking requires clear space directly in front of you and a motorcycle that remains vertical and controlled. Swerving requires open space to either side and involves leaning the bike momentarily while changing direction.

The decision between them comes down to geometry, not preference. If you have enough stopping distance available, use your brakes in a straight line. If you lack the room to stop but have lateral clearance, a swerve may be your better option. Your brain has less than a second to assess the situation and choose the right response.

Getting back on a motorcycle after years away can come with challenges you may not expect. Your experience may seem like an advantage, but after a long break, your reflexes, confidence, and familiarity with the bike may not be where they once were.

If you are involved in a crash, an insurance company may point to your years of riding and argue that you should have recognized or anticipated certain risks. In New York, comparative negligence can make your experience and actions part of the conversation when determining responsibility.

The key is to understand how these arguments can affect your claim and preserve the evidence that supports your side of the story.

Getting back on a motorcycle after years away can feel surprisingly familiar. The controls may feel natural, the confidence may come back quickly, and you may feel like you never stopped riding. But the motorcycle you're returning to may be more powerful, more responsive, and very different from what you remember.

Your reactions and riding habits may also have changed during that time. If traffic suddenly stops or another driver makes an unexpected move, those differences can matter. Before jumping back into heavy traffic, take time to reacquaint yourself with the bike and rebuild your skills in a controlled environment.

Your Harley is going to OC BikeFest... but is Transport Mode on?

If you’re trailering your bike to Ocean City, this is the one setting you can’t forget.

Transport Mode disables your security system’s motion sensors, so your hazard lights don’t flash the entire trip and drain your battery before you even arrive in OC.

Here’s how to turn it on! 👇

See you in OC, Sept. 9–13! While you’re there, keep an eye out for Richard Jaffe and come say hi!

Your helmet may look perfectly fine on the outside, but age, previous impacts, and regular wear can affect its protective performance. Even without visible damage, the materials inside a helmet can deteriorate over time.

If your helmet has been involved in a crash, replace it. Also check the manufacturer's recommendations for replacement and inspect the shell, liner, straps, and fit regularly. Your helmet is one of your most important pieces of protective gear, so don't wait until you need it to find out it is no longer up to the job.

A new motorcycle can feel completely different from the bike you're used to. The brakes may respond more aggressively, the throttle may be much more sensitive, and the bike may react faster to your inputs. What feels normal on your old motorcycle can produce a very different result on a new one.

That is where problems can begin. Before riding a new bike aggressively or in heavy traffic, take time to learn its braking, throttle response, balance, and handling in a controlled environment. Give yourself time to build new muscle memory and get comfortable with how the motorcycle responds.

Filtering through traffic may seem like a quick way to get around congestion, but it can put motorcycle riders in situations where drivers may not expect them. A vehicle can suddenly change lanes, move into an opening, turn, or drift toward you without seeing the motorcycle beside it. With limited space to react, even a small mistake can have serious consequences.

If you choose to filter, keep your speed controlled and constantly scan for movement from surrounding vehicles. Watch for wheels turning, gaps opening, brake lights, and drivers who may be distracted. Give yourself room to react and remember that saving a few minutes is never worth putting your safety at risk.

On ramps can be one of the most dangerous stretches of a motorcycle commute. You are dealing with vehicles accelerating, merging into traffic, changing lanes, and drivers who may not see a motorcycle entering the roadway. The combination of speed and limited space can leave very little time to react when something goes wrong.

As a rider, stay alert and anticipate that other drivers may not see you. Watch their wheels, avoid lingering in blind spots, maintain a safe position, and adjust your speed to create more space. Most importantly, always keep an escape route available so you have options if another driver makes an unexpected move.
