Dealing with burnout? You are not alone in the slightest.
What is burnout? Burnout is defined as “Exhaustion of physical or emotional strength or motivation usually as a result of prolonged stress or frustration”. In more basic terms, it means that you’re exhausted from doing too much. Common symptoms include loss of motivation, feeling like a failure, and feelings of defeat.
Having done full time school and full time work for two and a half years, I started to experience these symptoms in the Fall. I became unmotivated when it came to both work and school. Luckily, I am taking the extra time I have this semester to recover.
Here are a few tips that have helped me with burnout:
1.) Stop taking on more than you can handle! Even if an opportunity is great, you have to think about how much time you can dedicate. If you’re already booked and burnout, it’s okay to say “no”. Bigger and better opportunities will come, have faith. Adding activities to your already busy schedule won’t give you proper time to recover from burnout, in fact, it will make you more burnt out .
2.) Work on yourself mentally! I think many people in their busy lives forget to take the time to improve on this when it is incredibly crucial to recovering and becoming a new, motivated person.
3.) Work on yourself physically! Health is wealth. Even if you can’t afford a gym or don’t have time, simple 10-15 minute home work outs and walks/ runs outside will do. I guarantee, you will feel a lot more confident and energized in the end. This plethora of new energy, confidence, and much more will do more than assist in curing your burnout.
4.) Take a break! Take it easy on you and find time to relax. This relaxation period will allow your body and mind to feel fresh and motivated when work or school comes around.
5.) Find activities that distract your from work or school! Doing activities you love will calm you and make you fresh for the next day of school or work.
