Estate planning are usually very serious meetings and can be emotional… and some client meetings are a little more memorable than others. 😂💀

Let’s just say this particular client’s final wishes were VERY specific. And his wife was not exactly on board.

While a letter of wishes can be a great way to communicate personal preferences to your loved ones, it doesn’t replace legally binding estate planning documents. And unfortunately, not every wish can legally be carried out. (Yes, even if you write a three-page essay about it.)

The goal of estate planning isn’t just to document what you want. It’s to make sure your wishes are clearly communicated, legally supported where possible, and don’t leave your loved ones wondering what on earth they’re supposed to do.

And sometimes, that starts with a very interesting conversation. 😂

Here to tell you that NOT EVERY estate planning conversation is about who gets the house. Sometimes it’s about who’s NOT getting Dad’s comic book collection. 😂

One of our clients spent years (and apparently $50,000+) building his collection, and let’s just say… his kids won’t be inheriting it… even though I don’t they they wanted it 🤫

Instead, we helped him find a college with the right resources to preserve something he’s spent so much time and money collecting.

And that’s one of the things we love about estate planning. No two families, priorities, or wishes look the same.

Whether it’s a home, family heirlooms, or thousands of comic books, your estate plan should reflect what matters to YOU and what you actually want to happen to it.

Even if your kids have a few opinions about it. 😉

Imagine minding your business one day and finding out your ex left you a house in Cape Cod, another property, AND all his bank accounts. 👀

Oh, and you haven’t spoken in YEARS.

We cannot wait for that phone call. 🤫

Believe it or not, these are the kinds of conversations we have in estate planning. And while this one might be a little unconventional, there’s actually a lesson here.

You can leave your assets to just about anyone you choose. But naming someone as a beneficiary is only part of the equation.

Florida has specific requirements for how a will needs to be signed and witnessed. And if those steps weren’t done correctly, that piece of paper you thought had everything handled could create a much bigger issue when your family actually needs to use it.

Online templates can be convenient. Just make sure yours will actually do what you created it to do.

And when in doubt? Have an estate planning attorney take a look at it. 🤍
