White Pelicans Arrive Near Islands
The summer appearance of American White Pelicans on Whidbey/Fidalgo Islands is a relatively modern phenomenon, beginning in 2015 -2016. They unexpectedly began arriving, historically they were only found in Southeastern/Eastern WA Columbia River basin. Rising regional temperatures and shifting environmental conditions led them to finding new coastal summering grounds. They have a nine foot wingspan! It you are lucky enough to catch them feeding, it is like watching a ballet. Welcome to their beautiful "squadrons."
