One of the most common things we hear after families attend a workshop like this?

“We wish we had done this sooner.”

Estate planning often stays on the back burner until someone experiences probate, a medical emergency, or the stress of trying to handle things without a clear plan in place. That’s exactly why Schwartz Legacy Planning hosts events like Tacos & Trusts — to make these conversations easier, more approachable, and far less overwhelming than people expect.

Join Attorney Jensen Bonanno on June 8th at 6:00pm at Rooted Bottle Market & Bar in Mount Pleasant for a free estate planning workshop with complimentary tacos and real-world education designed to help you better protect your family, your wishes, and your future.

This is one of the most common “wait… what?” moments we see with families.

One minute you’re attending elementary school graduations and packing lunchboxes. The next, you’re shopping dorm lists and realizing your child is legally considered an adult at 18.

What many parents don’t realize is that turning 18 changes more than school paperwork. Without the right documents in place, you may not automatically be able to access medical information, speak with providers, or help make important decisions in an emergency — even as a parent.

Three simple documents can help bridge that gap:
• Healthcare Power of Attorney
• HIPAA Authorization
• Durable Power of Attorney

It’s not about control. It’s about making sure you can still step in, support them, and help guide early adult decisions if something unexpected happens.

A little preparation now can make a big difference later.

Most parents don’t realize this until it’s too late.

Once your child turns 18, you no longer have automatic access to their medical information or the ability to make decisions on their behalf.

That includes college students living just down the road — or across the country.

A healthcare power of attorney and HIPAA authorization help make sure you can step in if needed.

It’s a simple step. But an important one.

This time of year is full.

You’re helping them finish one chapter
while quietly getting them ready for the next.

Packing, planning, celebrating… and making sure everything is in place.

There’s just one detail that many families don’t realize until later.

Turning 18 changes more than expected — including who can step in if something happens.

It’s something worth taking a moment to think about.

May always seems to move a little faster than expected.

School events, graduations, summer planning, travel, camps, schedules — and somewhere in the middle of all of that are the things you keep meaning to get done “when life slows down.”

For a lot of families, estate planning ends up sitting on that list for years.

As Summer approach, and the school chaos wind down, it’s a good reminder that protecting the people you love doesn’t have to wait for a perfect time or a crisis to happen first.

If creating or updating your documents has been sitting in the back of your mind, this is your sign to start the conversation.

You can schedule a private appointment directly with our team - or join us next Monday at Wine & Wills at Rooted for a more relaxed, approachable way to learn about the process.

Message us for the event link or head to the link in bio for both.

Mothers have a way of carrying everything.
The schedules, the details, the decisions no one else even sees.

So much of what you do is already about protecting the people you love.

It’s steady. Thoughtful. Constant.
And it doesn’t go unnoticed.

Happy Mother’s Day 🧡

The one who handles the questions, the decisions, the things no one else wants to get wrong.

For many families, that’s mom.

And when it comes to planning ahead, having the right person in your corner matters just as much.

Someone who can bring clarity, structure, and a sense of calm to the process.

Happy (early) Mother’s Day 🧡

Wouldn’t have it any other way.
This team just gets it.

We see this more often than people think.

A couple comes in with a “trust” they set up years ago—often through work, sometimes as part of a benefits package.

On paper, it exists.

But when we start asking the real questions—who receives what, who’s in charge, how it actually works—there are gaps. Big ones.

In this case, they hadn’t named beneficiaries. Their children weren’t listed. And they’d been relying on it for decades.

This isn’t about doing something wrong. It’s about assuming something is finished when it may not be.

Estate planning isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it’s not something that should live in a file untouched for 20 years.

If you’ve set something up through work or a basic template, it’s worth taking a closer look to make sure it actually reflects your life now—and does what you think it does.
